A comparable regular season
The Championship regular season normally gives each of its 24 clubs 46 matches, producing 552 fixtures. The main comparison therefore uses matches labelled as regular-season fixtures and completed with a recorded final result. It excludes the five promotion play-off matches that appear in many season-wide fixture totals.
That choice matters because the question is seasonal league scoring, not every goal attached to the competition label. Fourteen seasons contain 552 completed regular-season matches. In 2025–26, the checked record contains 551, so its rate uses 551 rather than silently assuming the missing fixture had an average score.
The goal record
The table puts volume and frequency together. The broad centre of the series is around 1,400–1,480 goals and 2.5–2.7 per match. The sharpest departure is the 2020–21 low, followed by the high 2.681 rate in 2023–24.

The first four seasons form a relatively high opening block: the rate rises from 2.571 in 2011–12 to 2.707 in 2012–13, then settles at 2.598 and 2.670. 2015–16 breaks that pattern at 2.422, before 2016–17 through 2019–20 return to rates between 2.553 and 2.668. This is not a competition moving in one direction; it is a series of local peaks and corrections.
The regular-season denominator also explains why the table keeps matches visible. A 552-match season gives every goal a slightly smaller weight than a 551-match season. The difference is tiny in rate terms, but preserving it makes the latest row reproducible. It also prevents readers from assuming that every season in a historical database has identical completion coverage.
The 15 rows contain both volume and frequency signals. The 2012–13 volume high is also the rate high, while 2023–24 is second in total goals and second in rate. The 2020–21 low is last on both measures. In the less extreme seasons, the rate is the better way to see whether a total is being driven by a small denominator.
The low and the high
The volume high is 2012–13 with 1,494 goals. It is 75 goals above 2011–12 and 20 above 2014–15, the next high in the early part of the window. The rate of 2.707 is also the highest in the table, so this is not a quirk of a larger denominator.
The low is 2020–21: 1,274 goals and 2.308 per match. It sits 183 goals below the 2019–20 total and 111 below 2021–22. The change is large enough to identify a real scoring trough in the recorded season, but the aggregate cannot tell us whether it came from finishing, team mix, match conditions or other factors.
The distance between the high and low is 220 goals, or 0.399 goals per match. That spread is a useful scale for reading the rest of the series: a two- or three-goal difference between nearby seasons is ordinary noise compared with the full historical range.
Between the high and low sit several useful comparators. 2014–15 records 1,474 goals at 2.670 per match, almost as many goals as the 2012–13 high but over a slightly lower rate. 2018–19 reaches 1,473 at 2.668. Those near-matches show that the Championship can return to a similar scoring environment after several years without reproducing the same exact total.
The 2020–21 trough is followed by a 111-goal rise in 2021–22, a 43-goal fall in 2022–23 and a 138-goal rise in 2023–24. The sequence is volatile enough that a single rebound should not be extrapolated. It is safer to describe the trough as a marked observation inside a wider band.
The recovery after 2020–21
Scoring recovered to 1,385 goals in 2021–22, then dipped to 1,342 in 2022–23 before reaching 1,480 in 2023–24. The latest two seasons are lower in volume, but 2025–26 still records 160 more goals than the low and a rate 0.295 higher than 2020–21.
The path is therefore not a simple rebound line. It is a rise, a small relapse, another high, and then a move back toward the long-run middle. The 2025–26 rate of 2.603 is close to the 15-season weighted average of 2.561 when each season is weighted by its completed regular-season matches. It is not an outlier in either direction.
Keeping the 2025–26 denominator visible is important. Its 1,434 goals are not directly comparable to a 552-match season as a total, but the 2.603 rate remains comparable. No goal total has been scaled up to invent a 552nd fixture.
From 2020–21 to 2025–26, the regular-season total rises by 160 goals, but the latest rate remains below the 2023–24 high by 0.078 goals per match. This is why “recovery” is more accurate than “new record.” The competition has moved away from its low without matching its strongest recent season.
The 2025–26 row is also a useful reminder that completed coverage is not the same as a complete scheduled calendar. The missing regular-season fixture does not prevent a descriptive rate, but it does mean the raw total should be read with its denominator. A future update can add the row if the result is later recorded; this article does not project it.
Volume versus frequency
Volume answers how many goals the regular season produced. Frequency answers how many arrived per completed match. In this dataset, most seasons have the same 552-match schedule, so the rankings are similar. The rate still gives the more honest comparison for 2025–26 and for any future season with incomplete coverage.
It also prevents a common interpretive error: a season with more goals is not automatically more prolific if it also contains more matches. Conversely, a lower total can coexist with a stable rate when the denominator changes. The table lets the reader see both rather than choosing one headline without context.
The Championship’s long view is a broad scoring band, interrupted by a 2020–21 trough and followed by a measured return rather than a permanent new peak.
For editorial use, the safest headline pairs the two units: “1,434 goals in 551 completed regular-season matches, or 2.603 per match.” That format lets a reader distinguish the observed volume from the normalised frequency immediately. It also makes comparisons with a full 552-match season less likely to be overstated.
The same discipline helps when discussing a season’s style. A high league rate can arise from more goals for both sides, from fewer draws, or from a different competitive balance. The goal table answers how much scoring occurred; it does not answer why the matches produced it. Those are separate questions for a deeper study.
The regular-season filter is part of the result, not a technical footnote. A season-wide competition total can include the promotion play-off matches, but those fixtures answer a different question and have a different competitive context. Keeping them outside the table means that the goal total, the match count and the rate all refer to the same league phase. That consistency is especially important when the latest row has one fewer completed regular-season fixture than the normal schedule.
The long view is therefore best described in layers. First, the competition usually operates inside a broad band of roughly two and a half to just under three goals per match. Second, the 2020–21 row is a clear trough in both total and rate. Third, the later rebound reaches another high before moving back toward the centre. None of those observations requires a causal explanation, and none should be turned into a forecast. They are simply the most reproducible features of the completed regular-season record.
Limits and method
Data source: Xtra-Stats. The sample uses completed regular-season Championship fixtures for 2011–12 through 2025–26 and excludes promotion play-off matches. Fourteen seasons contain 552 completed regular-season matches; 2025–26 contains 551, and its observed denominator is retained.
Goals per match is total recorded goals divided by completed regular-season matches and rounded to three decimals. The analysis does not infer causes, adjust for team strength or chance quality, or treat an absent fixture as a zero-goal match.
