Scope and definitions
The Jupiler Pro League record is read in two layers: regular-season matches and every recorded post-season phase. Home-win share is the proportion of matches won by the home side. The goal edge is the home side’s goals minus the away side’s goals, divided by matches. Draws and away wins remain visible because a home percentage alone cannot show where the other outcomes went.
The independent comparison uses 2011–15 and 2021–25, five seasons each. The two windows both contain five completed seasons, but their phase inventories are not the same. The detailed season table begins in 2014, but the audited aggregates retain the 2011–13 rows so the early baseline really is five seasons.
A dash in the post-season columns means that no post-season match is present for that season. It is not a zero-goal phase and it is not evidence that every team skipped a competition. Keeping absence distinct from zero prevents the phase mix from being flattened into a misleading result.
The regular-season edge is positive, but smaller

Regular-season home wins fell from 46.50% to 43.50%, a drop of 3.00 percentage points. The home goal edge narrowed by 0.111 goals per match. Away wins rose from 28.50% to 31.48%, while draws were almost unchanged at 25.02%. In other words, the later regular season is less tilted toward home wins without becoming an away-dominated competition.
The window averages conceal a varied path. In the detailed rows, home wins reach 49.58% in 2016, dip to 40.20% in 2020, recover to 45.83% in 2024 and fall to 40.83% in 2025. The edge follows its own path: 0.475 in 2016, 0.098 in 2020, 0.500 in 2024 and 0.158 in 2025. Home wins and goal margin often travel together, but not perfectly.
The 2020 row is a useful warning. Home teams won 123 of 306 regular-season matches, while away teams won 113, so the result share still leaned home. Yet the edge was only 0.098. A competition can retain more home wins than away wins while the score margin becomes much smaller.
Post-season phases tell a different story

The early post-season sample is more home-weighted than its regular season: 51.82% home wins and a 0.558 goal edge. In 2021–25 the direction changes. Post-season home wins fall to 39.50%, away wins reach 36.30%, and the goal edge is only 0.149. The later post-season still has a positive average margin, but it is no longer a stronger home environment than the regular season.
That contrast is not a paradox. Play-off phases draw different clubs together, often with different incentives and smaller samples. A championship group can have a different competitive balance from a relegation group, and a phase with six matches per team does not have the same statistical weight as a long regular season. The article therefore uses “post-season phases” as a coverage label, not as a claim that all play-offs behave identically.
The official 2024/25 format illustrates the point: 16 clubs split into Champions, Europe and Relegation play-offs. The regular season had 30 matchdays before those phases, and the post-season added ten matchdays. The number of matches and the mix of opponents both change at the boundary, so a blended home average would hide the mechanism of the comparison.

2014–18 provides the clearest early run. Regular-season home-win share moves from 44.17% to 49.58% and back to 45.42%, while the post-season share is 56.45%, 53.45%, 43.33%, 46.67% and 53.33%. The post-season goal edge follows the same broad variability, ranging from 0.333 to 0.862. A single high phase value should not be promoted to a permanent league characteristic.
The 2020–22 run is more unsettled. Regular-season home-win share sits at 40.20%, 41.83% and 44.26%. Post-season home wins are 38.46%, 34.62% and 37.50%, with away wins outnumbering home wins in 2021 and 2022. The corresponding post-season goal edges are 0.269, -0.308 and -0.083. Those negative values mean away goals exceeded home goals in the observed phase, not that every play-off match favoured the visitors.
The 2023–25 post-season rows recover some home balance but not the early strength: 42.67%, 37.33% and 40.74% home wins, with edges of 0.200, 0.133 and 0.333. The regular season is also uneven, from a 0.392 edge in 2023 to 0.500 in 2024 and 0.158 in 2025. Phase, season and result measure must be read together.
How to interpret the home edge
Home-win share measures outcomes; goal edge measures scoring margin. They can disagree when matches are close. In a small phase, two or three results can move the percentage by several points, while a handful of goals can change the margin without changing the winner. Reporting both makes the direction more transparent.
The regular-season comparison supports a modest decline in home tilt between the two windows. The post-season comparison supports a larger decline and a change from a strongly positive early phase to a much flatter later one. Neither result identifies a cause. Travel, attendance, scheduling, team strength and match incentives are plausible contexts, but they are not separated by this series.
Format changes also affect the clubs present in each phase. The 2026/27 move to an 18-club, 34-matchday regular competition is official context for the future, not a measured historical observation in this article. It should not be used to extend a 2021–25 trend or to predict a new home edge.
The most durable takeaway is methodological: compare like with like first. Use regular season against regular season and post-season against post-season, keep the number of matches beside every rate, then use all-phase totals only as a secondary summary. That order prevents a larger play-off sample from disguising a change in the regular competition.
Limits and method
This is a descriptive reading of completed matches with recorded final scores. The post-season group combines several official phase labels because a consistent long-run phase taxonomy is not available across every season. It is therefore a coverage group, not a claim that title, Europe and relegation play-offs are interchangeable.
The early audited window begins in 2011, while the detailed table begins in 2014. The later window contains 2021–25. The 2019 row has no recorded post-season matches and is shown with a dash. Rates use observed matches and do not estimate missing fixtures or treat absent phases as scoreless.
Home advantage is reported through home-win share and home goal edge, with draws and away wins shown as companion outcomes. The figures do not include points per match, attendance, expected goals or club-level explanations. They support a phase-aware comparison, not a causal model.
