Ykkönen is Finland’s national men’s league competition, currently operating as the third tier of the Finnish football pyramid and also known as Finnish Ykkönen. Although the present structure is associated with the third tier, the history of the Ykkönen name reaches back to 1973, when it was established as the second level of Finnish football under the name I divisioona. For many years, Ykkönen was therefore the principal division immediately below the Veikkausliiga. The Finnish league pyramid was restructured for 2024, with Ykkösliiga introduced as the new second tier. Ykkönen subsequently took its current place as the national third tier, while retaining its role as a significant route towards higher-level football.

How the league works

The recorded competition format is based on a 12-team main series. Each club plays every other team twice, once at home and once away, giving each side 22 matches in the opening phase. After that double round-robin, the standings are divided into an Upper Group and a Lower Group. The six leading teams continue in the Upper Group, where they compete for the championship and promotion opportunities; the remaining six enter the Lower Group to determine survival and relegation.

Points gained in the main series carry into the continuation groups, preserving the value of results from the opening phase. The split-stage fixtures provide an additional round of decisive matches without erasing the work completed earlier in the season. Because clubs remain in contention for promotion or face the threat of relegation deep into the campaign, the latter stages give the league a clear competitive focus at both ends of the table.

Scoring, standings and match rules

Ykkönen follows the standard football points system: three points for a win, one for a draw and none for a defeat. League positions are determined first by points, followed by the applicable goal-difference and goals-scored criteria. Head-to-head provisions may also be used where the competition regulations require them. Matches are played over the standard 90 minutes, with substitutions and disciplinary procedures governed by the current Laws of the Game and Palloliitto regulations.

Promotion play-offs can use a one-legged or two-legged format depending on the applicable season regulations. Where a decisive tie remains level after normal time, extra time and a penalty shoot-out may be used to determine the qualifier. These details can vary by edition, so the specific regulations for the relevant season take precedence over the general competition framework.

Promotion, relegation and sporting purpose

The Upper Group determines the leading positions and the principal route upwards. The winner earns direct promotion to Ykkösliiga, while the next-highest qualifying club can enter a promotion play-off against a Ykkösliiga opponent. At the bottom of the competition, the two lowest-ranked clubs in the Lower Group are relegated to Kakkonen. These consequences make every phase meaningful: early-season points can shape the promotion race, while the split stage can decide whether a club remains in the national league.
