USL League One Fixtures, Results and Standings

USL League One is a professional men’s soccer league in the United States and a Division III competition within the United States Soccer Federation’s recognised professional structure. Operated by the United Soccer League (USL), it provides competitive professional football in emerging and mid-sized markets while giving developing players a route towards higher levels of the American game.

Identity and purpose

League One occupies an important place in the USL ecosystem. It is designed to connect academy and collegiate development with established professional football, combining local club identity with a national competitive platform. Clubs can field emerging players alongside experienced professionals, allowing talent to develop in a demanding senior environment while bringing professional matches to communities beyond the largest American cities.

The competition is not based on automatic promotion or relegation with the USL Championship. Club participation is instead determined by ownership, market and facility requirements, together with compliance with professional league standards. The league has retained an expansion-minded approach, enabling new clubs to enter when they satisfy the relevant sporting, organisational and stadium criteria.

Origins and development

USL League One was formed and launched in 2019 to strengthen the professional structure below the USL Championship and to fill a third-tier role in the American soccer pyramid. Its creation reflected the demand for sustainable professional clubs in mid-sized markets and for a clearer development pathway for players. The competition’s recorded coverage on Xtra-Stats runs from 2019 through 2025, across seven recorded seasons, with the first recorded event dated 10 April 2021.

The league has developed within a wider USL network rather than as an isolated competition. Its clubs operate to common commercial and sporting standards, but retain distinct local identities and rivalries. This balance between central governance and community-based clubs is one of League One’s defining characteristics.

Organisation and access

The United Soccer League governs League One through its league administration and Board of Governors, with the organisation headquartered in Tampa, Florida. The USL establishes operational and competition standards, while the United States Soccer Federation provides the broader regulatory framework for professional football in the country.

For clubs, entry depends on meeting professional requirements relating to ownership, local support, market suitability and stadium presentation. Player recruitment can include domestic signings, international transfers subject to the applicable registration and immigration requirements, and academy players. A published roster framework uses an 18-player matchday squad, with scope for up to two additional under-18 players under the relevant professional or academy agreements. United States-based clubs may also be eligible for national and regional cup competitions, including the U.S. Open Cup.

Competition format

The principal League One campaign follows a hybrid structure: a regular season leading into a separate postseason tournament. The regular season is organised around a national league table, with schedules designed to balance competitive fairness and the considerable travel distances involved in American football. Historically, clubs have generally played a balanced home-and-away programme, although the exact schedule can vary as membership changes.

League matches use the standard points system: three points for a win, one for a draw and none for a defeat. A match level after regulation in the regular season remains a draw. At the end of the regular season, the leading clubs qualify for the playoffs. The postseason uses a fixed, single-elimination bracket, with seeding based on final regular-season standings and the higher-seeded club normally receiving home advantage.

Playoff matches cannot finish level. A drawn match proceeds to two 15-minute periods of extra time and, if the scores remain equal, a penalty shootout determines which club advances. In recent published competition rules, head-to-head results form the principal regular-season tiebreaker, followed by goal difference and total wins. The precise hierarchy should therefore be read alongside the regulations for the relevant season.

Some seasons have also included the USL Cup, an additional interleague competition using group-stage and knockout elements. This is separate from the regular-season table and the League One postseason, so results in that event should not be confused with league standings or playoff qualification.

Calendar and sporting stakes

League One normally follows a spring-to-autumn calendar. The regular season generally begins in March and occupies most of the year, while the playoffs run into late autumn, with the final typically scheduled in November. This timing suits the North American sporting calendar and allows the championship campaign to build towards a decisive postseason conclusion.

The central sporting objective is to win the League One championship through the playoffs, while regular-season performance determines seeding and home advantage. Clubs also gain exposure through domestic cup football, where eligible United States teams can face opponents from higher divisions. For players, strong performances can lead to opportunities in the USL Championship, Major League Soccer or overseas leagues.

At present, promotion and relegation with the USL Championship is not part of League One’s operating structure. The USL has announced plans for a connected promotion-and-relegation model involving its wider professional pyramid from 2028. Until that reform takes effect, League One remains a self-contained Division III league whose importance lies in competitive football, player development and the expansion of the professional game across the United States.
