Tercera División RFEF - Group 13 is a men’s league in Spain’s football pyramid, representing the Region of Murcia and also known as Spanish Tercera Federación Group 13. It forms part of the fifth tier of the national system, linking the regional amateur game with the semi-professional levels above it. The competition gives Murcian clubs a structured route towards Segunda Federación while providing an important senior platform for local players and developing squads.
Role and governance
The group is organised by the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), working with the Murcia Football Federation. Although its matches are played within the Region of Murcia, the league is part of the national Tercera Federación structure. That combination gives it a regional identity but nationally defined sporting consequences: clubs compete for access to the fourth tier, and the leading eligible side can also gain a route into the Copa del Rey.
Its purpose is both competitive and developmental. Established as part of the restructuring that reshaped Spain’s lower divisions, the present fifth-tier framework took shape for the 2021–22 season, replacing the former Tercera División in that position within the pyramid. A 2020 formation date is also associated with the competition, reflecting the period in which the reorganisation was created and implemented. How clubs enter and who can play
Clubs can reach the group through promotion from the Preferente de Murcia, while relegation from the tier above also affects the make-up of each season. However, a reserve side cannot be promoted into a division already occupied by its parent club. This restriction is particularly important when the final standings determine promotion or cup-related places, because the highest eligible non-reserve club may take a place that a subsidiary team cannot use.
The competition combines established senior clubs with reserve teams and developing players. It therefore occupies a distinctive position: results matter immediately, but the group also functions as a bridge for footballers and clubs seeking to progress beyond the regional level.
Regular-season format
The standard league programme consists of 18 teams playing a double round-robin schedule. Each club meets every other side once at home and once away, producing 34 matches per team. The table is determined by the familiar Spanish points system: three points for a win, one for a draw and none for a defeat.
When teams finish level on points, the principal order of comparison is based on their meetings with one another. The sequence is head-to-head points, head-to-head goal difference, overall goal difference and then total goals scored. This places direct sporting performance ahead of a purely season-wide calculation, while still providing broader statistical measures when earlier criteria do not separate the clubs.
Promotion play-offs and progression
The group champion earns direct promotion to Segunda Federación, the fourth level of the Spanish league system. Clubs finishing from second to fifth enter the regional promotion play-offs. The usual first phase consists of two-legged ties: second place faces fifth, while third place meets fourth. The winners then progress through the regional route, after which the successful group representative enters a national promotion tie against a qualifier from another regional group.
The play-off structure makes the final weeks of the league especially significant. Finishing higher does not merely improve a club’s position in the table; it can determine the route and seeding in the knockout phase. In the regional play-offs, if the aggregate score remains level after extra time, the higher-placed team from the regular season advances rather than the tie being decided by a penalty shoot-out.
Relegation and Copa del Rey implications
At the bottom of the table, clubs generally face relegation to the Preferente de Murcia, the regional level below. The usual provision is for the bottom three teams to go down, although the final number can change according to regional administrative circumstances, including the movement of Murcian clubs from the division above.
The group champion can also secure a place in the following season’s Copa del Rey. Reserve teams are not eligible for that competition, so if a subsidiary side finishes in the qualifying position, the place passes to the highest-ranked eligible club. This gives the upper end of the table an additional incentive beyond promotion itself.
Season calendar
The competition follows the typical Spanish and wider European football calendar, generally running from September to June. The regular season usually reaches its conclusion in late May, with the regional and national promotion play-offs following in June. For clubs in Murcia, that creates a demanding finish: the league campaign determines direct promotion, relegation and play-off seeding before the knockout stages settle the remaining route towards the national fourth tier.
