The competition was formed in 2020 as part of the restructuring of the Spanish league system, with its current framework taking shape during the 2021 reorganisation. That reform was intended to create a clearer bridge between regional football and the national divisions below the professional game. The RFEF establishes the national sporting framework, while the FFIB contributes the territorial administration and organisation required for Balearic football.
Entry is normally determined by sporting movement between divisions. Clubs can arrive after promotion from the Balearic Regional Preferente competitions, including the relevant Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza-Formentera leagues. When clubs finish level on points, ranking is normally settled first through their head-to-head record, followed by head-to-head goal difference. If equality remains, the comparison moves to overall goal difference and then total goals scored. These criteria are especially important because league position determines direct promotion, play-off access and, in some cases, the advantage carried into a tie. The exact application of any additional criteria is governed by the annual competition rules.
In the regional play-offs, a drawn aggregate score can remain decisive after extra time. The higher-ranked team from the regular season will typically advance under the applicable regulations rather than the tie automatically being decided by a penalty shoot-out. Season calendar and sporting stakes
The campaign follows the usual Spanish and European football calendar, beginning in late August or September and running through the spring. The regular season generally concludes in May, with promotion play-offs extending into May or June. Promotion to Segunda Federación is the central sporting objective. Reaching the fourth tier gives a club a higher national profile and access to a more demanding level of competition. The division also carries important consequences at the other end of the table: clubs occupying the relegation places drop back into the Balearic regional competitions. The number of relegation places can depend on the annual structure and on movement between divisions, so it should not be treated as permanently fixed.
