This movement between divisions keeps the competition open and gives clubs throughout the national system a realistic pathway to the highest level.
Sporting qualification alone is not sufficient. Participating clubs must satisfy FSHF licensing standards covering areas such as financial stability, stadium and training infrastructure, administration and youth development. The league typically features 10 clubs, although the exact composition is subject to the relevant season’s regulations and the outcome of promotion, relegation and licensing decisions.
==Competition format and progression==
The modern Superliga combines a league phase with a decisive end-of-season playoff. During the regular season, clubs meet each opponent multiple times, with the established structure based on a quadruple round robin: each team plays every other team four times, twice at home and twice away. The resulting table rewards sustained performance across the campaign and determines both the championship picture and the relegation battle.
The leading clubs then progress to the Final Four, a compact playoff designed to add a high-stakes conclusion to the season. Regular-season finishing positions determine the seeding and pairings, with the best-placed teams receiving the most favourable positions in the bracket. The decisive matches are staged at a neutral venue, commonly the Air Albania Stadium in Tirana, rather than using the normal home-and-away league arrangement.

Clubs must first accumulate points consistently over a long regular season; they must then manage the pressure of a short knockout-style finale. The regular-season table therefore remains essential even when the title is settled in the Final Four, because it shapes the route through the playoff and can provide a competitive advantage in the deciding matches.

The regular-season points system follows the standard football model: three points for a win, one for a draw and none for a defeat. When clubs finish level on points, head-to-head performance is prioritised before goal-based criteria are considered under the competition regulations. Matches are played under the Laws of the Game. Squad-management provisions generally follow the modern international framework, including five substitutions in three permitted windows, subject to the regulations applying to the particular edition.
