Stars League About
Stars League, currently branded the Ooredoo Stars League for sponsorship purposes, is Qatar’s top-tier professional men’s football league. Also commonly called the Qatar Stars League, it crowns the national champion and provides the highest domestic platform for clubs, players and coaches in the Qatari football system.
Qatar’s premier domestic competition
The league is designed to raise the standard of football in Qatar while giving leading local players the opportunity to compete alongside established international talent. Its clubs form the core of the country’s professional game, and the competition contributes to the development of footballers and coaches who may represent the Qatar national team. It also gives Qatar a regular stage for high-level domestic football and an established route into the wider Asian club game.
The competition is administered by the Qatar Stars League organisation under the umbrella of the Qatar Football Association. The league organisation oversees its commercial, administrative and operational framework, while clubs must satisfy the professional and licensing requirements applicable to participation in Qatar’s top division.
Origins and development
The league’s recorded origins date to 1963. It was reorganised in 1972 as Qatar’s professional football structure developed, evolving from earlier domestic league arrangements into the modern top-flight competition. That development helped establish a more organised platform for elite football in the country and supported the league’s later expansion of professional standards, infrastructure and international profile.
Over time, the competition has become associated with ambitious clubs, prominent overseas players and coaches, and modern stadium facilities. Its identity combines the objective of producing a national champion with a broader role in strengthening the country’s football ecosystem.
How the league works
The Stars League generally features 12 professional clubs and uses a double round-robin format. Each club plays every other club twice during the season: once at home and once away. This produces a single cumulative league table rather than a knockout bracket. The champion is the club that finishes first after all scheduled matches have been completed.
The standard scoring system applies throughout the league: a win earns three points, a draw earns one point for each club, and a defeat earns no points. When teams finish level on points, positions are typically separated by goal difference, followed by total goals scored and then head-to-head results. These criteria ensure that the final ranking reflects both overall performance and the results between closely matched teams.
Although the Stars League itself is a straight league competition, its final standings have consequences beyond the title race. High-placed clubs can gain eligibility for Asian Football Confederation competitions, including the AFC Champions League Elite and AFC Champions League Two, subject to the applicable continental access rules. League performance can also influence qualification or seeding for domestic competitions such as the Qatar Cup, which is contested by leading finishers, while the Emir Cup provides a separate knockout route to domestic honours.
Promotion, relegation and sporting stakes
The league operates within a merit-based promotion and relegation system. The Second Division champion earns direct promotion to the top flight. At the other end of the table, the bottom-placed Stars League club is relegated automatically. The club finishing second from bottom normally enters a relegation play-off against the Second Division runner-up, with the winner taking the remaining place in the top division.
The principal domestic prize is the Qatar Stars League Shield, awarded to the season’s champion. Finishing first also brings sporting prestige and the prospect of continental football. For clubs, a high position can increase exposure, strengthen recruitment prospects and provide access to the most demanding competitions available in Qatari and Asian club football. Avoiding relegation is equally significant because top-flight membership carries major sporting and commercial importance.
Seasonal calendar and match conditions
The season usually follows an autumn-to-spring calendar, beginning around August and concluding in April or May. This scheduling pattern helps avoid Qatar’s most intense summer heat and allows the league to coordinate its programme with international windows, domestic cups and the requirements of the national team.
Matches are played under the Laws of the Game established by the International Football Association Board and are overseen by the refereeing structure of the Qatar Football Association. Unlike knockout competitions, league matches do not normally require extra time or penalty shoot-outs: the result is recorded after normal playing time, and the points are added to the table.
