Serie D - Girone F About

Serie D - Girone F is the Italian Serie D Girone F, a men’s regional league in Italy and a fourth-tier competition within the national football pyramid. Organised by the Lega Nazionale Dilettanti (LND) under the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), it provides a competitive route between regional amateur football and professional Serie C.

Role in Italian football

Serie D is Italy’s highest national level of non-professional football. Although clubs are classified within the amateur structure, the standard is highly competitive and the division acts as an important bridge towards the professional game. Girone F is one of Serie D’s geographically organised groups, generally drawing clubs from central and eastern regions such as Abruzzo, Lazio, Marche and Molise.

The group exists to decide which club earns promotion to Serie C, while also giving ambitious semi-professional and amateur sides a national platform. Its regional composition helps limit travel and operating costs, but the competition remains part of the countrywide Serie D system governed by the FIGC and administered through the LND.

Origins and development

The wider competition’s institutional roots date to 1948, when the national structure was created, originally under the name Promozione, to accommodate clubs moving through the expanding Italian league system. The Serie D name became established for most of its history from 1959, and the division moved to amateur status in 1981. Following the 2014 restructuring of the Italian pyramid, Serie D became firmly established as the fourth tier.

Those milestones describe the development of Serie D as a whole rather than the creation of the present Girone F edition. The recorded competition coverage for this group begins with the 2021–22 season, whose first listed event took place on 19 September 2021. Available records cover six seasons through 2025, providing a modern statistical window into a competition with much older national foundations.

How clubs enter

A place in Serie D Girone F can be reached through more than one sporting route. Clubs may win promotion from Eccellenza, the fifth level of the Italian system, or arrive after relegation from Serie C. Participation is also subject to administrative, financial and organisational requirements established by the FIGC and LND. Failure to satisfy those conditions can result in exclusion, while bankruptcy and related registration rules may prevent a club from simply recreating its previous place in the division.

Season format and progression

Girone F is normally played as a double round-robin league. In a typical 18-team group, every club meets each opponent twice, once at home and once away, producing 34 matches per team. Standings use the standard Italian points system: three points for a win, one for a draw and none for a defeat.

The group winner receives direct promotion to Serie C. The leading club also advances to the national Serie D championship tournament, traditionally associated with the Scudetto Dilettanti, where group winners compete to be recognised as Italy’s overall amateur champion.

Teams finishing immediately below the champion normally enter the group’s promotion play-offs. The usual arrangement involves positions from second to fifth, with single-leg matches used to establish a ranking that may become relevant when places in Serie C become available. The precise progression can depend on the regulations and the number of professional vacancies, so the play-offs should not be confused with automatic promotion.

At the other end of the table, the lowest-placed sides face direct relegation to Eccellenza, while other clubs in danger may be required to contest relegation play-outs. These ties are generally played over two legs, with the exact positions involved determined by the season’s regulations and final standings.

Tie-breaks and decisive matches

A tied league table is normally resolved through the applicable sporting regulations, with head-to-head performance generally an important criterion. For especially significant positions, including a contest for first place or certain relegation outcomes, a one-match decider may be staged at a neutral venue rather than settling the issue solely through secondary table calculations.

Promotion play-off matches have their own principles. If an early-round tie remains level after extra time, the higher-placed team from the regular season advances; a penalty shoot-out is not used in that situation. This rewards performance across the league campaign and gives a clear advantage to the side that finished higher in the standings.

Calendar and sporting significance

The season typically runs from September to May. The regular campaign determines promotion, play-off and relegation positions, after which the relevant post-season matches and the national Serie D championship tournament follow. This gives the group two connected purposes: deciding movement between the fourth and third tiers, and identifying a representative for the wider Scudetto competition.

For supporters and clubs, Italy Serie D Girone F therefore combines regional identity with national importance. Its matches affect promotion to professional football, survival within the national amateur structure and qualification for one of Italian football’s distinctive end-of-season championships.
