Serie D - Girone B About
Serie D - Girone B is an Italian men’s football league, operating within Serie D, the fourth tier of the Italian football pyramid and the country’s highest national level of non-professional football. The group provides a structured route for clubs from regional amateur football to the professional ranks of Serie C, while preserving strong local identities across its geographical area.
Identity and place in Italian football
Serie D is organised as a national competition divided into regional groups. Girone B typically brings together clubs from Lombardy and Veneto, although the precise composition can change between seasons as groups are arranged according to sporting and geographical criteria. Its alternative recorded title is Italy Serie D Girone B.
The wider Serie D structure dates from 1948 and has long served as the main national bridge between the regional Eccellenza leagues and professional football. Clubs compete at amateur status, but the standard is highly competitive: established organisations, ambitious promoted sides and teams relegated from Serie C can all meet in the same division. Available season records for this competition span 2019 to 2025, covering six recorded seasons.
Governance and access
The competition is administered by the Dipartimento Interregionale of the Lega Nazionale Dilettanti (LND), under the authority of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC). The governing structure sets the sporting, financial, registration and infrastructure requirements that clubs must satisfy before taking part.
Teams generally reach Serie D Girone B through one of two sporting routes. Successful clubs from the regional Eccellenza competitions can be promoted, while clubs relegated from Serie C may enter Serie D. Placement in Girone B is normally determined by geography rather than by a permanent membership list. A club must also retain the required amateur status and comply with the relevant administrative and ground regulations. If a promoted or registered club cannot meet those conditions, vacancies may be dealt with through the applicable national procedures and sporting rankings.
League format and season progression
The regular season uses a double round-robin system. Each participating club plays the other teams in the group twice, once at home and once away. A victory is worth three points, a draw one point and a defeat no points. The final standings determine promotion, access to the promotion play-offs and relegation consequences.
The group champion earns direct promotion to Serie C, subject to the competition’s registration and eligibility requirements. Clubs finishing immediately below the champion can enter the promotion play-offs, normally involving positions second through fifth. The opening matches are single-leg fixtures, with second place facing fifth and third facing fourth. Higher-placed teams generally have home advantage, and the winners meet in a divisional final. The successful group representative then joins the national play-off phase, where group representatives compete for priority in the process used to fill vacancies in the professional leagues.
The play-off route is therefore different from direct promotion. Winning the group guarantees the sporting title and the direct promotion place, while the play-offs provide an additional pathway for high-finishing clubs when places in Serie C become available.
Tie-breaks and match decisions
League standings are normally separated using head-to-head criteria where the regulations require them. In particularly important situations, such as a tie affecting first and second place or a decisive relegation boundary, a separate play-off match at a neutral venue may be used instead of relying solely on the table.
Promotion play-off and relegation play-out matches are normally resolved with two 15-minute periods of extra time if the scores are level after 90 minutes. In early rounds, a tied match may then be awarded to the higher-placed team from the regular season rather than decided by a penalty shoot-out. The exact application depends on the governing regulations for the relevant season, so a specific edition should always be read alongside its official competition rules.
Relegation and survival
The lowest-ranked clubs face relegation to Eccellenza, the regional level below Serie D. In the standard structure, the bottom two teams are relegated automatically, while teams just above them may enter two-legged relegation play-outs. These survival matches can be cancelled when the points difference between the relevant positions is sufficiently large under the regulations in force. The arrangement makes the lower half of the table significant throughout the season: clubs are competing not only for promotion but also to avoid a return to regional football.
Calendar and wider honours
A typical campaign begins in late August or September, with the regular season usually ending in May. Post-season promotion play-offs and relegation play-outs can continue into June, and league fixtures are traditionally concentrated on Sundays. The exact calendar may be adjusted for cup commitments, weather, local requirements or national scheduling decisions.
The group title is the principal sporting objective because it brings the direct route to Serie C. There is also a separate national tradition: the winners of the Serie D groups can compete in the Scudetto Serie D tournament, known as the competition for the amateur championship of Italy. That event gives group champions an opportunity to compete beyond their own regional division and adds a national honour to the promotion race.
