Serie D therefore combines the community character of amateur football with the intensity and visibility of a national league.
Governance and historical development
Serie D is administered by the Lega Nazionale Dilettanti (LND), which operates within the organisational structure of the Federazione Italiana Giuoco Calcio (FIGC). The competition was formed in its current role in 1948 and adopted the name Serie D in 1959, helping to establish a consistent national framework for Italy’s highest amateur tier. It is also commonly associated with the idea of an interregional championship because its groups cross the boundaries of the regional leagues.
Its purpose is both sporting and structural. At the top end, it creates a merit-based route towards professional football. At the same time, it protects a nationwide network of clubs that represent towns, cities and local communities outside the professional divisions. This dual role explains why Serie D remains an important part of the Italian football system rather than simply a lower-level competition.
How clubs enter and the league format
Clubs can reach Girone A through promotion from the regional Eccellenza championships or through relegation from Serie C. The group generally contains between 18 and 20 teams, although the exact number can vary according to the composition of the national divisions and the applicable season regulations.
The regular season uses a double round-robin format. Each club plays every other team at home and away, producing a league table based on the standard points system: three points for a win, one for a draw and none for a defeat. The season normally follows the European football calendar, beginning in or around September and reaching its conclusion in spring, usually by May. Playoff and playout fixtures are then staged after the regular season, commonly in late May or early June.
Serie D also operates with youth-development requirements. The applicable regulations require clubs to include designated younger players in their match squads or line-ups, with the precise age categories and number determined by the rules for the relevant season. These provisions reinforce the competition’s role as a pathway for emerging Italian players as well as a destination for experienced amateur footballers.
Promotion, playoffs and relegation
The winner of Girone A earns direct promotion to Serie C, making first place the division’s principal sporting objective. The group champion also qualifies for the national Scudetto Serie D competition, in which the winners of the nine Serie D groups compete for the title of Italy’s amateur champion.
Teams finishing immediately below the champion enter the Serie D playoff structure, generally involving clubs placed from second through fifth. Winning these fixtures does not guarantee promotion, but it can improve a club’s position on the repêchage list used when vacancies arise in the professional leagues. The playoff route therefore offers an additional route towards Serie C, while preserving the distinction between sporting recommendation and automatic promotion.
At the other end of the table, the lowest-placed clubs face relegation to Eccellenza. Depending on the final standings and the number of points separating the relevant teams, clubs in the lower part of the table may instead contest playout matches to preserve their Serie D status. These fixtures give survival a decisive end-of-season focus and can be as consequential for a local club as the promotion race.
Standings and decisive matches
Head-to-head criteria are used among teams level on points when resolving ordinary ranking positions, subject to the regulations of the relevant edition. For especially important ties, such as the championship, promotion or relegation positions, a single-match spareggio may be required at a neutral venue rather than relying solely on the table. Post-season playoff and playout procedures follow the competition regulations governing that edition, with the regular-season finishing position playing an important role in seeding and in the treatment of tied matches.
Serie D Girone A is consequently more than a regional league. It is a national-level amateur competition with a clear sporting ladder: clubs can rise from Eccellenza, challenge for Serie C, compete for the Scudetto Serie D or drop back into the regional system.
