Serie C - Girone C About

Serie C - Girone C is a men’s professional football league in Italy and one of the three regional groups that make up the country’s third tier. Its geographical focus is the Centre-South and southern islands, while its sporting framework is national: clubs compete for access to Serie B, professional status and a place in the wider Italian football pyramid.

Role in Italian football

The competition provides a demanding bridge between Serie D and the higher professional divisions. It combines established clubs with ambitious teams seeking to return to Serie B and developing players aiming to progress through the Italian game. Although Girone C is regional in composition, its promotion system links it to the other two Serie C groups in a national end-of-season play-off.

The group is organised by the Lega Italiana Calcio Professionistico, commonly known as Lega Pro, under the authority of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC). Registration is subject to sporting, financial and infrastructural requirements. Clubs must satisfy the relevant licensing standards, with financial checks overseen through the FIGC framework; failure to meet those requirements can result in exclusion, sanctions or the loss of points.

History and identity

The competition’s historical roots reach back to 1935, although Serie C has been reorganised and rebranded several times. The creation of the Serie C1 and Serie C2 divisions in 1978 altered the structure of the third and fourth levels, while the 2014 reunification restored a single Serie C competition. Girone C therefore belongs to a long-running national system whose regional divisions have been adjusted over time to balance professional standards, travel demands and access for clubs across Italy.

Italian Serie C Girone C is the alternative form commonly used for the competition’s identity in English-language football coverage. The current three-group structure places Girone C among the most important competitive environments in southern Italian football, with clubs representing both major urban centres and smaller communities with strong local support.

League format and season structure

The regular season normally uses a double round-robin format. Each participating club plays every other club once at home and once away. A group of 20 teams produces 38 matchdays, although the precise membership and calendar can be affected by promotion, relegation, licensing decisions and exceptional regulatory changes.

The standard scoring system is straightforward: three points are awarded for a win, one for a draw and none for a defeat. League positions are generally separated first by head-to-head points and head-to-head goal difference, followed by overall goal difference and goals scored where necessary. Clubs should therefore assess the published regulations for the relevant season when a final ranking has significant consequences.

The league programme generally begins in late August and runs through the autumn and winter before concluding in April or May. The post-season usually extends into May and June, when promotion play-offs and relegation play-outs determine the final movement between divisions.

Promotion and relegation

The winner of Girone C earns direct promotion to Serie B. A further promotion place is decided through the national Serie C play-offs, which bring together qualifying clubs from all three groups. The play-off route is staged, with higher-ranked teams receiving more favourable seeding and, in appropriate rounds, home advantage or the benefit of progressing when scores remain level. The competition consequently rewards consistency over the full regular season while preserving a high-stakes route for clubs that finish below the automatic promotion position.

The national play-offs involve several phases. Early rounds commonly use the league placing to determine seeding, and a higher-ranked team can advance automatically if the tie remains level under the applicable rules. Later stages use a more conventional knockout approach, with extra time and penalty shoot-outs available where the regulations require them. The exact entry positions and tie arrangements may vary between editions, so the governing regulations for each season remain decisive.

At the other end of the table, the bottom club is normally relegated directly to Serie D. Other teams in the lower positions enter relegation play-outs, generally contested over two legs, with the losing clubs also dropping out of the professional ranks. These matches carry major sporting and financial consequences because relegation can reduce broadcasting income, commercial resources and the club’s professional operating base.

Why Girone C matters

Girone C is more than a regional league table. It is a competitive route into Serie B, a platform for player development and a meeting point for historic southern clubs and teams emerging from Serie D. Its double round-robin season tests sustained performance, while the national play-offs and play-outs create a decisive conclusion in which a small number of matches can reshape a club’s future.

The winners of the three Serie C groups also compete for the Supercoppa di Serie C, a separate round-robin event that determines the overall champion of the third tier. That tradition gives the regional groups a shared national identity while preserving the local rivalries and geographical character that make Serie C - Girone C distinctive.
