Pro League A is the top-tier professional football league in Uzbekistan, occupying the highest position in the country’s domestic football pyramid. The competition is currently known as the Artel Super League and has also been widely identified as the Uzbekistan Super League. It determines Uzbekistan’s national champion and provides the principal domestic route into the country’s wider professional and continental football structure.
Purpose and place in Uzbek football
The league was established in 1992, following Uzbekistan’s independence and the end of the former Soviet regional football arrangements. Its central purpose is to provide a national championship for the country’s leading professional clubs while supporting the development of players, teams and football infrastructure across Uzbekistan.
Although the competition is domestic, its importance extends beyond the national game. Strong performances can lead to qualification for Asian club competitions, giving successful Uzbek sides an opportunity to compete within the framework of the Asian Football Confederation. The league therefore combines the immediate objective of crowning a national champion with a broader role as the principal gateway from Uzbek club football to the continental stage.
Organisation and governance
The competition is organised by the Uzbekistan Professional Football League, commonly abbreviated as UzPFL, under the oversight of the Uzbekistan Football Association. The association’s membership of both the Asian Football Confederation and FIFA places the league within the recognised international football system.
Administration involves more than scheduling matches. Clubs must meet the professional standards required for participation, including applicable sporting, financial and infrastructure criteria. Licensing is therefore an important part of access to the top flight, helping ensure that admitted teams can operate at the level expected of a national professional championship.
Promotion, relegation and access
Clubs generally reach the top division through performance in the Uzbekistan Pro League, the second tier of the national system. The usual pathway gives the leading Pro League teams direct promotion, while a further promotion or survival place may be decided through a playoff involving a high-finishing second-tier club and a lower-ranked top-flight side. The precise arrangements can vary under the regulations for a particular season, and promotion remains subject to licensing requirements.
At the other end of the table, the lowest-ranked teams risk relegation to the Pro League. This creates a clear sporting connection between the two divisions: success in the second tier offers a route to the national stage, while poor performance in the top flight can bring the loss of elite status.
League format and match schedule
The competition uses a double round-robin format. Each participating club plays every other team twice, once at home and once away. This structure gives every side a balanced programme of home and away fixtures and makes the final standings a test of performance across the full season rather than a single knockout tie.
The 2025 season featured 16 clubs, reflecting the established scale of the modern competition. The number of participants has changed over the league’s history, with previous editions featuring different line-ups as the national football structure developed. The league itself is not a knockout tournament; cup competitions and the Uzbekistan Super Cup are separate events within the broader Uzbek football calendar.
Uzbekistan traditionally follows a spring-to-autumn football calendar. League campaigns generally run from March to November, a pattern suited to regional weather conditions and designed to reduce the disruption caused by severe winter conditions. A summer break may divide the season before the return fixtures are completed.
Points and ranking rules
League matches use the standard points system: three points for a win, one for a draw and none for a defeat. Regular-season fixtures are settled by the result after 90 minutes; extra time and penalties belong to knockout matches or certain promotion and relegation playoffs rather than ordinary league games.
When teams finish level on points, ranking is determined through a sequence of sporting criteria. The order begins with points gained in matches between the tied teams, followed by goal difference in those head-to-head meetings. If the teams remain inseparable, the comparison moves to overall goal difference across the league and then total goals scored.
Titles, continental ambition and tradition
Winning the league brings the status of Uzbekistan’s national champion and places the successful club in contention for the country’s available continental berths. The exact qualification route and number of places depend on the relevant Asian competition regulations and domestic allocation for the season, but the league title remains the primary sporting prize in Uzbek club football.
Historically, Pakhtakor Tashkent is the competition’s most successful club and has set the benchmark for domestic achievement. Its record forms part of the league’s identity, while the annual contest between established powers, ambitious challengers and newly promoted teams continues to shape the development of professional football in Uzbekistan.
