Primera B About
Primera B is Colombia’s professional second-tier football league, currently branded Torneo BetPlay DIMAYOR for sponsorship purposes, and it provides the principal route into the country’s top division, Categoría Primera A. The competition is organised by DIMAYOR (División Mayor del Fútbol Profesional Colombiano) and is part of the national men’s professional football pyramid.
Role and origins
Established in 1991, the league was created to give Colombian football a formal promotion-and-relegation pathway between professional clubs. It has since become both a route back to the elite for established sides and an important development environment for players seeking regular senior football. Clubs compete for promotion to Primera A, while the league also gives supporters across Colombia a national stage on which regional teams can build a professional identity.
Primera B is not normally entered through a conventional third-tier promotion system. Participation is reserved for professional clubs recognised by DIMAYOR and able to satisfy the relevant sporting, institutional and administrative requirements. Clubs may retain their place by remaining in the division, while teams relegated from Primera A join the competition after finishing among the lowest performers under Colombia’s three-year average relegation system. Where vacancies or exceptional admissions arise, membership is determined through the governing body’s regulatory and administrative processes.
How the competition works
The annual structure is generally divided into two tournaments: the Apertura in the first part of the year and the Finalización in the second. Each tournament normally begins with an all-against-all stage. Depending on the edition and the number of participating clubs, teams play a single round-robin schedule, usually with between 15 and 19 matches. The opening phase establishes the standings and identifies the eight teams that progress to the next stage.
Those eight qualifiers are placed into two groups of four, commonly known as quadrangulars. The groups are played on a home-and-away basis, giving each team a further six matches. Seeding from the opening league table is used when forming the groups, with the strongest initial positions typically separated. The winner of each quadrangular then advances to a two-legged final, with the aggregate winner becoming champion of that Apertura or Finalización tournament.
The exact regulations can vary between editions, so the structure should be understood as the competition’s established recent model rather than an unchangeable formula. In particular, seeding and other regulatory provisions may affect how ties are resolved in the quadrangular stage or how promotion is allocated at the end of the season.
Points, standings and decisive matches
League matches use the standard football points system: three points for a win, one for a draw and none for a defeat. In ordinary standings, level teams are separated through regulatory tie-breakers that can include goal difference, goals scored, head-to-head results and away goals in the relevant head-to-head matches. The order and application of these criteria depend on the regulations for the specific edition, making the official competition rules decisive when positions are closely contested.
The finals are normally played over two legs. If the aggregate score is level after the second match, the tie proceeds directly to a penalty shoot-out rather than extra time. That rule gives the second leg particular significance: a team must manage both the aggregate score and the immediate pressure of a potential shoot-out.
Promotion and season stakes
Winning an individual tournament is the first major objective, but the season’s ultimate promotion picture is decided across both halves of the calendar. The Apertura winner and Finalización winner generally meet in a home-and-away Grand Final. If the same club wins both tournaments, it is normally promoted automatically as the season champion. If different clubs prevail, the Grand Final winner usually earns the principal promotion place.
A second promotion opportunity is often determined through a further play-off involving the Grand Final runner-up and the highest-ranked eligible club in the year-long aggregate table that has not already secured promotion. This arrangement rewards tournament success while also recognising consistency over the full campaign. Because promotion regulations may be amended between editions, the applicable season rules take precedence over the general pattern.
At the opposite end of the Colombian system, Primera B is also shaped by the pressure of relegation from Primera A. The top flight uses a three-year average table, meaning relegated clubs can arrive with significant professional experience while ambitious second-tier sides compete to replace them. The result is a league in which promotion is both a sporting prize and a route to greater financial, commercial and competitive visibility.
Calendar and importance
The Apertura generally runs from February into June, followed by the Finalización from around July until November or December. The mid-year transition separates the two tournaments and allows clubs to reset their squads, adjust tactical plans and respond to the demands of a long campaign.
For the seasons represented from 2016 through 2025, the competition’s modern identity is defined by this combination of league football, group-stage pressure and two-legged finals. Beyond its promotion function, Primera B is a significant scouting and development ground for Colombian talent. Its clubs connect local football communities with the national professional system, while its most successful players can progress to Primera A, overseas leagues and the international game.
