Premier League, officially the Premier League of Belize (PLB), is Belize’s highest level of professional football and the country’s leading domestic league competition. It provides the main national platform for elite clubs, supports player development and determines which teams represent Belize in regional competitions under the Concacaf system.

Identity and development

The Premier League of Belize was formed in 2011 through the merger of the Belize Premier Football League and the Super League of Belize. The merger brought the country’s leading domestic competitions together under a single top-tier structure and created a more unified route for clubs, players and coaches pursuing professional football in Belize.

The league operates as a private organization under the umbrella of the Football Federation of Belize (FFB). The federation provides the wider regulatory framework for domestic football, including club licensing, player registration and standards connected with governance, coaching and development. The recorded competition archive covers seven seasons between 2018 and 2025, providing a substantial period for following Belize’s modern top-flight football.

Clubs, licensing and access

Participation is not open solely on sporting reputation. Clubs must receive a Domestic License from the FFB, demonstrating that they meet requirements in areas such as financial stability, youth development, infrastructure and coaching qualifications. These conditions are intended to ensure that top-level clubs are capable of operating responsibly and contributing to the long-term growth of the game.

Players and coaches are registered through the CONCACAF COMET platform. A club’s competition squad typically includes up to 20 players for a match start list: 11 starters and nine substitutes. Licensing and registration therefore form an important part of access to the Premier League, alongside a club’s sporting position within Belizean football.

Apertura and Clausura format

The competition uses a split-season structure familiar across Central America. Each campaign is divided into an Apertura, or Opening, season, and a Clausura, or Closing, season. Within each half-season, clubs play a round-robin schedule, meeting each opponent twice in home-and-away fixtures.

The regular phase determines the standings and identifies the four leading teams that progress to the playoff phase. The playoffs add a direct knockout element to the league season. The semi-finals are played over two legs, allowing the aggregate score across both matches to decide which clubs reach the final. The final then determines the winner of the relevant championship phase.

This structure combines the consistency of a league table with the pressure of elimination football. A club must perform over the regular schedule to reach the top four, then manage two-legged knockout ties and a decisive final to complete its challenge for the title.

Points, tie-breakers and decisive matches

The Premier League applies the standard football points system: three points for a victory, one point for a draw and no points for a defeat. When teams are level in the standings, the recorded tie-break hierarchy is total points, goal difference and total goals scored.

Knockout matches are decided by the aggregate score when a tie is played over two legs. If the aggregate scores remain level, the relevant match may proceed to extra time and, if necessary, a penalty shootout. These procedures ensure that a semi-final produces a winner even when the teams cannot be separated over the scheduled legs.

Calendar and sporting importance

The Apertura normally begins around July or August, while the Clausura follows later in the cycle and concludes around the middle of the year. The split calendar gives the competition two distinct championship phases and helps clubs plan their playing and administrative operations across the season.

Winning the Premier League is significant beyond domestic recognition. Champions represent Belize in regional club competitions, including the Concacaf Champions Cup pathway where applicable. The league also provides professional employment, competitive experience and a visible route for Belizean players to develop within a structured environment aligned with wider FIFA and Concacaf standards.

As Belize’s top domestic competition, the Premier League connects club football, national sporting ambition and regional participation. Its licensing system seeks to strengthen the clubs entering the league, while its Apertura–Clausura format gives teams more than one opportunity each year to compete for honours.
