Premier League About
Premier League, currently branded for sponsorship as the FNB Premiership and also known as the Botswana Premier League, is Botswana’s top-level men’s football competition. It is a national league governed by the Botswana Football Association (BFA), with the Botswana Football League (BFL) holding significant autonomy over its day-to-day administration. The competition provides the main domestic route to the national title, develops leading Botswana-based players and determines the country’s principal league representative in continental football.
Role in Botswana’s football pyramid
The Botswana Premier League sits at the summit of the country’s league structure. Clubs qualify for the competition through sporting performance and the BFA’s club-licensing process. The usual field consists of 16 clubs: 13 sides retained from the previous campaign and three promoted teams from the Botswana First Division’s North and South streams. Participating clubs must satisfy the requirements of the BFA Club Licensing First Instance Body, including standards covering sporting operations and infrastructure.
The competition is played in the male category and is intended to provide a sustained high-level platform for domestic players and clubs. Teams may field up to five foreign players simultaneously in their matchday line-ups, adding an international dimension while preserving the league’s role in developing local talent.
History and development
The competition’s recorded formation year is 1966. Its modern professional form is generally associated with 1978, when the national league structure was reorganised to replace regional pre-independence leagues and strengthen the organisation of top-flight football. Since then, the league has developed from a more semi-professional environment into Botswana’s leading professional domestic competition.
Available competition records cover nine seasons from 2016 through 2025. The commercial identity has changed over time as sponsorship arrangements have changed, but the competition continues to serve the same central purpose: deciding Botswana’s national league champion and providing the highest regular-season standard in the domestic game.
League format and scheduling
The Premier League uses a double round-robin format. Each of the 16 clubs plays every other club twice, once at home and once away, producing 30 matches per team and 240 fixtures across a complete league programme. The second half of the campaign normally mirrors the sequence of the first half, with the venues reversed.
A typical season begins in August or late August and concludes in May of the following year. This winter-to-spring calendar creates a continuous programme in which clubs must manage league fixtures, player availability and the demands of domestic cup football. Unlike a knockout competition, the title is decided by the final league table after all scheduled matches have been completed.
Points, rankings and tie-breakers
Teams receive three points for a win, one point for a draw and no points for a defeat. If two or more clubs finish level on points, ranking is determined through the following sequence: head-to-head records; goal difference in the head-to-head matches; overall league goal difference; total goals scored; and, where a title or relegation outcome remains unresolved, a playoff match.
Matches consist of two 45-minute halves separated by a 15-minute interval. These standard match conditions sit alongside the league’s competition-specific ranking rules, which are particularly important at the top and bottom of the table when small differences can decide continental qualification or relegation.
Promotion, relegation and continental stakes
The bottom three clubs at the end of the season are automatically relegated to the Botswana First Division. Their places are filled through promotion from the North and South streams, subject to the relevant sporting and licensing requirements. This creates a direct connection between the top flight and the wider national league system, while giving promoted clubs a clear route into the country’s highest division.
The league champion wins Botswana’s national title and earns the country’s place in the CAF Champions League under the applicable continental qualification arrangements. Success therefore carries significance beyond the domestic table: it gives the champion the opportunity to represent Botswana against clubs from across Africa. At the other end of the standings, avoiding the bottom three is the primary objective for teams engaged in the relegation fight.
Governance and continuing modernisation
The BFA remains the governing authority for the competition, including the regulatory framework and club-licensing oversight, while the BFL administers many operational aspects of the league. The structure reflects the competition’s continuing professionalisation, with standards for club participation, scheduling and match administration becoming increasingly important to its development.
The Premier League is therefore more than a schedule of domestic fixtures. It is the central league competition in Botswana’s football ecosystem: a promotion-and-relegation championship, a pathway for players and clubs, a qualification route to continental football and the annual contest for the country’s top-flight title.
