National 2 - Group D is a regional group within France’s men’s Championnat National 2 (N2), the country’s fourth-tier league competition. Also known as French National 2 Group D, it forms part of the national football pyramid administered by the French Football Federation (FFF), providing a competitive bridge between the professional divisions and the regional amateur game.

Role in French football

Championnat National 2 occupies an important position between Championnat National, France’s third tier, and Championnat National 3, the fifth tier. It brings together ambitious amateur clubs and the reserve teams of professional sides, creating a demanding senior environment for established players, emerging prospects and footballers returning from injury.

For amateur clubs, National 2 offers a route towards the professional game. For professional academies, it provides reserve players with regular football against experienced opponents in a competitive national framework. This mixed identity is one of the division’s defining characteristics: the competition combines semi-professional sporting ambition with the developmental role of professional reserve teams.

History and development

The modern National 2 structure belongs to a competition tradition that reaches back to the Championnat de France Amateur, established in 1927. The competition has been reorganised and rebranded several times as the French football pyramid has evolved. It was widely known as the Championnat de France Amateur, or CFA, before the National 2 name returned in 2017.

Group structures have also changed over time. National 2 historically operated with four regional groups, while a restructuring cycle covering the 2022–23 to 2025–26 period has moved the competition towards three larger groups. Group allocation is broadly geographical, helping to control travel demands while preserving regional rivalries. The Group D designation therefore needs to be understood in the context of the format used for the relevant season rather than as a permanent national structure.

Administration and eligibility

The FFF establishes the sporting regulations and manages the competition, with the Ligue du Football Amateur involved in its administration. Financial and organisational requirements are also monitored through the French football regulatory system, including the DNCG where applicable.

Clubs normally reach National 2 through promotion from National 3 or relegation from Championnat National. Both independent amateur clubs and the reserve sides of professional Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 teams may compete. The distinction is important at the top of the table: professional reserve teams can win matches and finish highly, but they are not eligible for promotion to Championnat National. Promotion places are reserved for eligible amateur clubs that satisfy the applicable sporting and financial conditions.

League format

National 2 is played as a league rather than a knockout competition. Within its group, each club normally meets every other club twice, once at home and once away. In a 16-team group, this produces 30 matches for each side over the season. The regionalised arrangement allows the FFF to organise a national fourth tier without imposing the travel burden of a single nationwide division.

League matches use the standard points system: three points for a win, one for a draw and none for a defeat. When clubs finish level on points, the applicable ranking criteria include results in the matches between the tied teams, goal difference in those matches, overall goal difference and goals scored. League fixtures are settled after 90 minutes; extra time and penalties are relevant only where a separate deciding match or play-off requires them under the regulations.

Promotion, relegation and season calendar

The winner of each group is normally promoted to Championnat National, subject to eligibility and regulatory approval. The group champions also compete for national recognition, with the strongest champion designated overall National 2 champion under the competition rules. Reserve teams remain in National 2 or below even if their results would otherwise place them in a promotion position.

At the other end of the table, the lowest-ranked clubs are generally relegated to National 3, with three relegation places per group commonly used. The exact number can be affected by the wider pyramid, administrative decisions and the final regulations for a particular season.

The season traditionally runs from August to May. Matches are usually concentrated around weekends, with a short suspension over the Christmas and New Year period before fixtures resume in January. Across its changing formats, National 2 - Group D has remained a significant proving ground for French clubs: a competition where promotion, survival and player development are pursued within the same demanding fourth-tier environment.
