National 2 - Group B is the Group B division of the Championnat National 2, France’s fourth-tier men’s football league and a national competition organised by the Fédération Française de Football (FFF). It provides a demanding bridge between regional amateur football and the higher national divisions, combining ambitious independent clubs with reserve teams connected to professional Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 organisations.
A fourth-tier competition with a dual purpose
Championnat National 2 occupies an important position in the French football pyramid. It is high enough to offer ambitious amateur clubs a route towards the professionalised national game, while also giving professional clubs a structured environment in which young players can gain senior experience. This mixture of independent sides and professional reserves is one of the competition’s defining characteristics.
Group B is one of the parallel regional divisions used within National 2. The groups are organised broadly by geographical considerations, helping limit travel while preserving a national standard of competition. Group B has therefore served as a distinct regional championship within the wider National 2 structure rather than as a separate cup or qualifying tournament.
Origins and development of National 2
The competition’s modern history reaches back to 1993, when it was created as the successor to Division 3. It was subsequently known as the Championnat de France Amateur, commonly abbreviated to CFA, before being renamed National 2 in 2017. The rebranding aligned the division more clearly with the naming structure of the Championnat National and the other levels of the French league system.
The organisation has also evolved in recent years. A restructuring covering the 2022–2026 period has reduced the overall number of clubs and changed the relationship between the parallel groups. Earlier editions were commonly presented through four groups, A to D, whereas the newer arrangement has used fewer, larger groups. The precise number of clubs and relegation places can consequently vary by edition, so individual season regulations remain important when assessing a table or promotion race.
Clubs, entry routes and eligibility
Clubs generally reach National 2 Group B through promotion from National 3 or relegation from the Championnat National, France’s third tier. The division is open to both independent amateur clubs and the reserve sides of professional teams, subject to the FFF’s sporting and administrative regulations.
Reserve teams play a significant developmental role, but they do not have the same promotion rights as independent clubs. A professional reserve cannot normally be promoted to the Championnat National, even if it finishes in a qualifying position. In practice, promotion is awarded to the highest-ranked eligible independent club. This rule ensures that the third tier is not filled by multiple reserve sides from the same professional structure while preserving a strong competitive pathway for senior amateur clubs.
League format and match rules
National 2 Group B is a league competition played on a double round-robin basis. Each club faces every other team at home and away, with the final number of fixtures depending on the size of the group in the relevant edition. Unlike a knockout cup, the competition has no semi-finals or final to determine the group winner: success is built through sustained performance across the league schedule.
The standard points system applies: a victory earns three points, a draw one point and a defeat none. Matches last 90 minutes, and league fixtures may finish level. Extra time and penalty shoot-outs are not used in ordinary National 2 matches because the competition is settled through league standings rather than knockout progression.
When clubs finish level on points, rankings are determined through the applicable sporting criteria. The listed hierarchy begins with points gained in head-to-head meetings, followed by head-to-head goal difference, overall goal difference and total goals scored. If an exceptional tie remains unresolved under the relevant regulations, the FFF may prescribe an additional deciding procedure, but the ordinary ranking process is based on the season’s results and goal records.
Promotion, relegation and the season calendar
The principal sporting prize is promotion to the Championnat National. The top-ranked eligible independent club in Group B earns that opportunity, subject to the FFF’s sporting, financial and administrative requirements. Winning or finishing at the summit therefore represents more than a regional achievement: it signals that a club is ready to compete in France’s national third tier.
At the other end of the table, the lowest-ranked clubs are normally relegated to National 3. The exact number of relegation places may change with the composition of the groups, movements between divisions and the regulations for a particular season. Clubs must therefore consider both their final position and the wider promotion-and-relegation structure when evaluating survival.
The traditional campaign runs from August to May, following the European football calendar. Fixtures are commonly played at weekends, with a winter interruption around December and January. Depending on the number of participating clubs, a Group B season may contain roughly 26 to 30 matchdays. The long schedule rewards consistency, squad depth and the ability to perform both at home and away.
Why National 2 Group B matters
National 2 Group B is distinctive because it brings together two complementary strands of French football: independent clubs seeking advancement and professional reserves developing the next generation of players. That combination makes the division competitive, strategically important and closely connected to the wider French pyramid. For an amateur club, the group offers a route towards the Championnat National; for a professional academy, it provides a demanding senior environment; and for supporters, it represents a full-season test in which every point can shape promotion, development or survival.
