MLS Next Pro About

MLS Next Pro is a professional men’s football league in the United States and Canada, operating as a U.S. Soccer Division III competition within Major League Soccer’s player-development ecosystem. Launched in 2022, it provides a competitive bridge between academy football and the MLS first-team environment while giving emerging professionals a platform to develop in a senior league.

Identity and purpose

MLS Next Pro was created to strengthen the pathway from youth development to elite professional football. Its clubs give young players regular exposure to physically and tactically demanding matches, while also providing established professionals with a setting in which to regain fitness or maintain match sharpness. The league is therefore more than a reserve competition: it is a professional proving ground intended to prepare players for MLS-level careers and, for some, opportunities in international football.

The competition is associated primarily with Major League Soccer clubs and their development affiliates, alongside independent professional teams. Major League Soccer organizes the league, while its Division III status places it within the professional structure recognized by the U.S. Soccer Federation. Although its clubs are based in the United States and Canada, the league’s wider purpose is to develop players capable of succeeding on the international stage.

History and development

The league’s first recorded event took place on 26 March 2022, marking the beginning of a competition designed to complete the pathway from MLS NEXT youth football to senior professional football. Its first recorded season was 2022, and Xtra-Stats coverage currently spans four seasons, from 2022 through 2025.

From its launch, the league has also been used to explore changes in football operations and match administration. MLS Next Pro has served as a testing environment for new competition rules and technologies, including the Off-field Treatment Rule and the Red Card Suspension Rule. These initiatives reflect its broader role as a laboratory for player development, officiating and performance analysis as well as a league in which clubs compete for a championship.

Clubs, rosters and access

Clubs operate with flexible squads intended to combine professional experience and youth development. The roster framework allows an active roster of up to 35 players, including up to 24 professional slots and up to 11 amateur or academy slots. No more than five youth academy players may be on the field for a club at the same time.

Amateur eligibility is generally aimed at players under 21 at the start of the season who have not previously played college or professional football. This structure enables clubs to introduce academy prospects to the professional game while retaining a mixture of developing players and experienced professionals. Post-season participation also depends on regular-season involvement: a player must generally have appeared on at least five matchday rosters to be eligible for the playoffs.

Competition format

MLS Next Pro combines a regular season with a knockout playoff. During league play, clubs compete in Eastern and Western Conferences divided into regional divisions, helping organize the schedule and reduce travel demands. Standings are determined by points, with seeding based primarily on each club’s total points and then on the competition’s stated tiebreaking criteria.

The recent playoff structure reflected in the 2025 season sends the leading eight clubs from each conference into a single-elimination bracket. Higher-seeded teams host playoff matches. A distinctive feature is the Pick-Your-Opponent process: the top seeds can choose their opponents from an eligible group of lower-seeded qualifiers, adding a strategic element to postseason qualification and rewarding strong regular-season finishes.

The playoff winner advances through the bracket to the MLS NEXT Pro Cup championship match. Winning the Cup is the league’s ultimate sporting achievement, but playoff progress also signals that a club is developing players capable of competing under pressure and moving towards MLS first-team opportunities.

Match rules and points system

Regular-season matches do not finish as draws. A team receives three points for a victory in regulation, while a match level after 90 minutes proceeds directly to a penalty shootout. The shootout winner receives two points and the losing team receives one; a regulation defeat earns no points. This system ensures that every regular-season fixture produces a winner while still distinguishing between regulation victories and shootout results.

For standings purposes, total wins are an important first tiebreaker, followed by goal difference and goals scored among the principal criteria. In the playoffs, a tied match follows a different route: the teams play two 15-minute periods of extra time, and penalties decide the winner if the scores remain level.

Season calendar and sporting significance

The competition generally follows a spring-to-autumn calendar. The regular season typically begins in late March and runs into early autumn, with the knockout stages and MLS NEXT Pro Cup final taking place in October or November. The exact schedule can vary by season, but the format is designed to provide a sustained programme of meaningful matches during the main North American football calendar.

For players, the league offers a crucial transition into senior football. For clubs, it combines competitive ambition with a clear development responsibility. Its results, standings, playoff matches and Cup final all matter in their own right, while the broader measure of success is the number of players prepared for MLS contracts and higher levels of the professional game.
