Meistaradeildin is the Faroe Islands Premier League, the top-tier men’s football league in the Faroe Islands. It forms the summit of the Faroese domestic pyramid, bringing together the country’s leading clubs in a league competition designed to crown the national champion and provide a route towards UEFA club football. The competition is also known through sponsorship branding as Betri deildin menn.
Role and governance
The league is administered within the Faroese football system by the Faroe Islands Football Association (FSF), which oversees competition regulations, licensing, disciplinary matters and the relationship between the top division and the lower tiers. Its purpose extends beyond deciding the domestic champion: it gives Faroese players a regular high-level platform, supports the development of clubs across the archipelago and offers successful teams access to international competition.
The competition is contested by 10 clubs. Entry is connected to the wider promotion and relegation structure, with the lowest-ranked top-flight sides exposed to relegation to 1. deild, the second tier, and eligible clubs from that division able to move up. Reserve or “B” and “C” teams can participate in the lower levels, but they are not eligible for promotion into the Premier League. Clubs seeking top-flight participation must also satisfy FSF licensing requirements covering areas such as stadium facilities, youth development and financial sustainability.
History and development
Founded in 1942, Meistaradeildin has developed alongside the growth and organisation of football in the Faroe Islands. The competition’s modern league identity emerged from the formative years of Faroese football, with the league structure established after the early period of national competition. Its history reflects the practical challenges of running football across a remote North Atlantic island group, while also showing the steady professionalisation of the sport.
Although Faroese clubs operate in a small domestic market, the league has become part of the wider European football system through the FSF’s membership of UEFA and FIFA. That connection has enabled champions and other qualifying clubs to represent the Faroe Islands in UEFA competitions, increasing the sporting and financial importance of domestic league performance.
Competition format
The league uses a traditional triple round-robin format. Each club plays every other club three times, giving each team 27 matches in a season. The additional fixture against each opponent means that some pairings involve two home matches for one club and one for the other. A pre-season draw determines which teams receive those additional home fixtures, rather than relying solely on a permanent home-and-away rotation.
Matches are played under the standard football points system: three points for a win, one for a draw and none for a defeat. Because this is a table-based league rather than a knockout competition, matches do not proceed to extra time or penalties when the scores are level after 90 minutes. The final table is therefore built through accumulated results over the full programme.
Teams level on points are separated first by goal difference and then by goals scored. Where further separation is required, the regulations also provide for head-to-head comparison, including points and goal difference from the relevant meetings. A play-off on neutral ground may be used if a tie affects a decisive outcome such as the championship or relegation, rather than as a routine feature of the season.
Season calendar and sporting stakes
The Faroese season normally runs from March to October. This spring-to-autumn calendar is adapted to the North Atlantic climate, avoiding the most difficult winter conditions and allowing clubs to prepare for the early stages of UEFA qualifying competitions. The title race, European places and relegation contests are consequently settled towards the end of the autumn programme.
The league champion earns the right to enter the qualifying rounds of the UEFA Champions League, subject to the access list and entry round applicable to that season. Other leading league finishers and the winner of the Faroe Islands Cup receive routes into UEFA Conference League qualifying. These places give domestic success consequences beyond the Faroese season, offering clubs additional revenue, competitive experience and the chance to raise the profile of football from the archipelago.
Meistaradeildin is therefore more than a national table: it is the central competition in Faroese men’s football. Its compact 10-team structure, demanding 27-match schedule, promotion and relegation links, and European rewards combine to make every point important from the opening fixtures through to the final weeks of the season.
