Liga Pro Serie B About

Liga Pro Serie B is Ecuador’s national men’s second-tier league, currently styled LigaPro Serie B and also widely identified as the Ecuadorian Serie B. It is a professional league competition positioned directly below Serie A in the Ecuadorian football pyramid, providing the principal route for ambitious clubs to reach the country’s top flight.

Identity and role

The competition has a national scope and combines established professional clubs, teams seeking a return to Serie A and ambitious sides progressing through the domestic system. Its central purpose is sporting: clubs compete over a full league campaign for promotion, while those unable to maintain the required standard face relegation to Segunda Categoría, Ecuador’s third tier.

Serie B is also an important development environment. Regular high-level football gives clubs the opportunity to test young players, build sustainable squads and strengthen their infrastructure. Reserve or affiliated teams may appear in the division under the applicable regulations, although such teams can be restricted from promotion if their senior club already competes in Serie A.

History and governance

The competition was established in 1971 as part of the development of a formal national league structure in Ecuador. Its format and administrative arrangements have changed over time as Ecuadorian professional football has been reorganised. The recorded competition history for this statistical reference covers 14 seasons from 2012 through 2025.

LigaPro, the Liga Profesional de Fútbol del Ecuador, manages the professional league framework and has overseen Serie B since assuming responsibility for the competition’s administration in 2019. The Ecuadorian Football Federation remains the country’s overarching football authority, while LigaPro establishes the competition regulations, fixture programme, licensing framework and disciplinary procedures applicable to its professional divisions.

How clubs enter and remain in the league

Clubs can reach Serie B through different sporting routes. Teams relegated from Serie A may enter the division, while successful clubs from Segunda Categoría can earn promotion into the professional structure. Continued participation depends on both sporting performance and compliance with the relevant LigaPro licensing requirements. These requirements can cover financial management, stadium and training facilities, administrative standards and youth development arrangements.

Promotion eligibility is not always identical for every participant. A reserve side or affiliated team may compete for league points and affect the table without being permitted to take a promotion place. As a result, promotion positions are determined by the final standings among eligible clubs, subject to the regulations for the relevant season.

Competition format and progression

Liga Pro Serie B has used more than one format during its history. Depending on the season’s regulations, clubs may meet in a double round-robin, with home and away fixtures, or in a longer round-robin schedule in which opponents play several times. Some editions have also divided the campaign into stages or tournaments, with aggregate performance used to determine the final classification.

This makes the competition different from a conventional knockout cup. Its outcome is normally shaped by sustained performance across the fixture list rather than by a single elimination match. Where a season includes separate stages, the regulations define how results are carried forward and whether final promotion or relegation positions are decided by an aggregate table, a later group or a play-off phase. The fixture calendar is scheduled in advance rather than drawn as a knockout bracket, with logistical and geographical considerations helping shape the programme.

Points and league-table rules

The standard points system applies: a win earns three points, a draw one point and a defeat none. League positions are therefore driven first by the accumulation of points across the campaign. When teams finish level, the applicable competition regulations determine the detailed order of tie-breakers. Goal difference and goals scored are commonly important criteria, while head-to-head records, away goals in specifically relevant play-off situations or a drawing of lots may also be used where the rules require them.

Extra time and penalties are not part of an ordinary league fixture. They are relevant only when a particular final-stage or play-off arrangement requires a winner after level scores, and their use depends on the regulations governing that edition.

Calendar and sporting stakes

The Ecuadorian football calendar has varied, but Serie B campaigns have generally been staged across the main part of the year, commonly beginning in February or March and concluding between October and December. The precise timetable, number of stages and closing date can change from one edition to the next, so the relevant season regulations provide the definitive guide.

The principal reward is promotion to Serie A. In the recent structure described for the competition, the leading eligible teams have contested the available promotion places, typically with the top two earning elevation to the first tier. Promotion brings access to Ecuador’s highest domestic level and the opportunity to compete for the status, revenue and wider sporting opportunities associated with Serie A.

At the other end of the table, the bottom teams are normally relegated to Segunda Categoría. The resulting pressure gives every match significance: clubs near the top are pursuing a place in the elite division, those in mid-table are protecting their professional status and those at the bottom are fighting to remain in the national professional system.
