Liga MX Femenil is Mexico’s premier professional women’s football league, a national league competition governed by the Federación Mexicana de Fútbol (FMF). Founded in December 2016, it occupies the highest level of the Mexican women’s football pyramid and was created to professionalise the sport, develop domestic talent and provide a stronger pathway towards the national team.
Purpose and place in Mexican football
The league forms the professional foundation of women’s football in Mexico. Its clubs are linked to the country’s Liga MX organisations, giving leading men’s football institutions responsibility for maintaining professional women’s teams. This structure has helped establish a regular national competition, improve player development and raise the visibility of the women’s game.
Although its principal purpose is domestic competition, Liga MX Femenil has become an increasingly important route for international careers. The league initially focused on Mexican-born players, but eligibility rules have developed over time. Mexican dual nationals are now permitted, and recent roster regulations allow up to four foreign players per team. The result is a competition that combines local development with a broader international playing environment.
Foundation and development
The FMF established the league in 2016 as part of a wider effort to create a sustainable professional structure for female players. Its mission extends beyond first-team matches: associated youth pathways, including under-17 football, are intended to support the progression of emerging talent. Clubs must also meet player-development requirements, including a prescribed number of minutes for younger players; recent competition guidance has typically placed that obligation at around 1,000 minutes for under-17 players during a season.
Participation is tied to the 18 clubs holding Liga MX franchises. There is no promotion and relegation system between Liga MX Femenil and a lower national division, so access is determined by the clubs that operate within the top-level Liga MX structure. Teams generally register between 22 and 28 players, subject to the applicable competition regulations.
Apertura and Clausura format
The league follows the short-tournament model used widely in Mexican football. Each year is divided into two championships: the Apertura, usually played from July to December, and the Clausura, generally running from January to May. Each tournament has its own regular phase and champion, creating two major title races within the annual calendar.
During the regular phase, all 18 teams play in a single table and meet each opponent once, producing 17 matches per club. Standard football scoring applies: a win earns three points, a draw one point and a defeat none. The table determines both qualification for the playoffs and the seeding order for the knockout rounds.
The top eight teams advance to the Liguilla. Quarter-final pairings follow the regular-season standings, with first place facing eighth, second facing seventh and so on. The higher-ranked club receives the advantage of hosting the second leg. The quarter-finals, semi-finals and final are all played as two-leg, home-and-away ties, so the champion is decided across a series rather than in a single final match.
Knockout rules and deciding ties
In the quarter-finals and semi-finals, a level aggregate score after the two legs is decided in favour of the higher-seeded team. There is no extra time or penalty shootout in these rounds, and the away-goals rule is not used. Regular-season performance therefore has a direct influence on the knockout stage, even after the league table has determined the playoff bracket.
The final uses a different procedure. If the aggregate score is level after the second leg, the teams play two 15-minute periods of extra time. If the scores remain level, a penalty shootout determines the tournament champion.
Calendar, governance and wider stakes
The FMF oversees the competition’s sporting, registration and financial framework, while the participating Liga MX clubs support the operation of their respective women’s sides. Matches are commonly scheduled at weekends, with occasional midweek fixtures used to manage the calendar and international commitments.
Winning the Apertura or Clausura brings more than a domestic title. The two tournament winners meet in the Campeón de Campeonas, an annual Champion of Champions contest that adds a further distinction to the season. Strong performances in Liga MX Femenil can also lead to qualification for the CONCACAF W Champions Cup, connecting Mexico’s leading clubs with the wider North American women’s club game.
With six recorded seasons from 2020 through 2025, Liga MX Femenil has developed from a newly established professional project into the central competition in Mexican women’s football. Its combination of two annual championships, a single-table regular phase and the high-pressure Liguilla gives the league a distinctive identity while providing clubs and players with a consistent platform for domestic and international growth.
