2. Lig is a men’s national professional league in Turkey, officially known as the TFF 2. Lig and occupying the third tier of the Turkish football pyramid. It is organised by the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) and provides the principal national bridge between the regional TFF 3. Lig and the second-tier TFF 1. Lig.

Role in Turkish football

The competition combines professional football with a strong development function. Clubs from across Turkey compete for promotion, while players use the league as a platform to establish themselves at a higher level. It was initially associated with the designation “Category B” before adopting the TFF 2. Lig name in 2007. The alternative name Turkish 2 Lig is also used in some records, but TFF 2. Lig is the competition’s recognised modern identity.

The TFF sets the competition regulations, licensing requirements and sporting framework. Clubs must be registered as professional teams and satisfy the federation’s financial, stadium and organisational criteria. Squad and matchday rules can also include requirements relating to Turkish players and age-based roster composition; the exact provisions depend on the applicable TFF regulations for the relevant season.

Entry, groups and match format

Clubs enter the TFF 2. Lig primarily through promotion from the TFF 3. Lig or relegation from the TFF 1. Lig. Once admitted, teams are allocated to either the White or Red Group. Each group follows a double round-robin schedule, so every club meets each opponent twice, once at home and once away.

A standard league match awards three points for a win, one for a draw and no points for a defeat. Positions are settled first by points, with head-to-head performance used as the leading comparison when teams finish level. The relevant head-to-head record may include points and goal difference, followed by overall goal difference and goals scored where further separation is required under the competition regulations.

The group winners earn automatic promotion to the TFF 1. Lig. The leading non-champions enter the promotion play-offs, which provide one further route upward. The play-off field is drawn from the highest-placed eligible teams in each group, with pairings and seeding based on regular-season positions. The later rounds determine a representative from each group, before a decisive final between the two group play-off winners.

Play-off matches that remain level after normal time can proceed to extra time and, if necessary, a penalty shoot-out. This creates a clear distinction between the league phase, where points accumulate across a full schedule, and the knockout phase, where a single result can decide a club’s promotion prospects.

Promotion to the TFF 1. Lig is the central objective. The two group champions receive direct promotion, while the play-off winner claims the additional promotion place. At the other end of the table, the bottom three teams in each group are relegated to the TFF 3. Lig. A typical season begins in late August or early September. The group campaign runs through the autumn and winter, usually with a short break around December and January, before concluding in early May.
