League Cup, also known as the Egypt League Cup, is a professional domestic men’s cup competition for Egypt’s top-flight clubs; in sponsorship branding it has been known as the WE League Cup. It occupies a distinctive place in the Egyptian football calendar, giving Egyptian Premier League sides an additional competitive programme alongside league and Egypt Cup commitments.
Purpose and place in Egyptian football
The competition was established in 2021, with its first recorded event taking place on 12 January 2022. Its main purpose is to create meaningful fixtures for Premier League clubs during periods when the domestic league is interrupted, particularly around international tournaments such as the Africa Cup of Nations. It also supports the commercial development of participating clubs by providing additional broadcast, sponsorship and prize-money opportunities.
Unlike the Egypt Cup, which can involve clubs from different levels of the football pyramid, access to the League Cup is restricted to teams competing in the Egyptian Premier League. It is therefore a top-flight competition rather than a nationwide open cup. All eligible Premier League clubs may enter, although participation has not always been universal when leading teams have faced congested schedules or competing sporting commitments.
Governance and eligibility
The League Cup is managed within Egypt’s professional-club football structure and its regulations are designed specifically for the country’s top division. The competition remains a strictly domestic men’s tournament, even though its commercial and broadcasting reach may extend beyond Egypt.
Eligibility is based on current Premier League membership. There are no preliminary rounds for lower-division clubs, and teams do not qualify through regional competitions. The field has generally been drawn from the division’s 18 clubs, although the exact number of participating teams and the group arrangement can vary between editions.
Competition format
The tournament has used a hybrid format combining a group stage with a knockout phase. In different editions, teams have been arranged in groups such as three groups of six, three groups of seven or four groups of four. Matches in the group stage are normally played once rather than home and away, allowing the competition to fit into the mid-season calendar.
The group draw may be seeded using clubs’ previous Egyptian Premier League positions, helping to distribute the strongest sides across the sections. Teams receive three points for a win, one for a draw and none for a defeat. The leading teams then progress to the knockout stage. Depending on the edition, this may include group winners, runners-up and, where the format requires it, the best third-placed teams.
The later rounds are played as single-match knockouts. The precise route has changed over time: some editions have included quarter-finals before the semi-finals, while others have progressed more directly from the group stage to the last four. Once the knockout bracket is established, the semi-finals lead to a one-match final that decides the champion.
Rules and deciding matches
Group standings are primarily determined by points. When teams finish level, the regulations generally use head-to-head results, followed by goal difference and goals scored. The detailed order can depend on the edition’s competition regulations, so historical tables should be read in the context of the relevant season.
In knockout matches, a draw after 90 minutes has commonly been settled by a penalty shootout, avoiding the need for an additional period during a congested schedule. Some editions or preliminary stages have used extra time, however, meaning that the method of resolving a drawn match is not identical across the tournament’s history.
Calendar and sporting importance
The group phase is usually scheduled in the winter, often during January or February, when the Premier League pauses for international commitments. Later rounds may be played several months afterwards, with semi-finals and the final potentially taking place in the summer. This calendar gives clubs competitive match practice while also helping preserve a regular domestic programme during breaks in league activity.
The winner receives the League Cup trophy, financial rewards and an important place in the national season’s honours list. The champion is also entitled to a place in the following Egyptian Super Cup, a four-team competition that brings together leading domestic cup and league performers. Prize distributions can change between editions; for the 2023–24 season, the reported champions’ award was 1.5 million Egyptian pounds.

Although relatively young, the League Cup has quickly developed its own identity within Egyptian football. Ceramica Cleopatra has been one of its most successful early participants, winning three titles by 2025.
