Ettan - Södra About
Ettan - Södra is a men’s football league in Sweden and one of the two regional divisions forming Ettan, the third tier of the Swedish league system. Also known as Swedish Division 1 Ettan South, it occupies the level between Superettan, the second tier, and Division 2, the fourth tier. The competition provides a national pathway for ambitious clubs, developing players, coaches and referees while offering an elite semi-professional environment below Sweden’s fully professional divisions.
A regional division in Sweden’s football pyramid
Ettan Södra is the southern counterpart to Ettan Norra. Clubs are allocated to the South group primarily according to their geographical location, although the Swedish Football Association may adjust the composition of the divisions from season to season to maintain balanced groups and practical regional distribution. The competition is organised through Ettanfotboll under the oversight of the Swedish Football Association, commonly abbreviated as SvFF, which establishes the governing competition regulations and licensing requirements.
The division was established in its current form in 2006 as part of the reorganisation of Sweden’s national football structure. Its creation replaced the earlier arrangement in which Division 1 had occupied a different position in the pyramid. Since then, Ettan has become the recognised third level of Swedish men’s football, linking the regional game with the professional national leagues. Xtra-Stats records seasons of Ettan - Södra from 2016 through 2025, providing a continuous statistical view across ten recorded seasons.
Clubs, access and eligibility
Clubs generally reach Ettan Södra through two sporting routes: promotion from Division 2 or relegation from Superettan. Entry is also subject to the relevant Swedish football regulations, including requirements relating to financial stability, facilities and other aspects of elite licensing. Geographic placement remains an important feature, but the final group membership can be adjusted by the governing authorities when necessary.
The competition’s role is therefore twofold. It gives established clubs a route towards professional football and Superettan, while also serving as a platform for emerging players and teams progressing from the regional divisions. A strong campaign can provide a club with national visibility, higher-level opposition and a realistic route towards the upper levels of the Swedish game.
League format and match rules
Ettan Södra normally consists of 16 clubs playing a single league table over a double round-robin schedule. Each team meets every other side twice, once at home and once away, producing 30 matches per club during the regular season. There is no separate group stage or knockout phase within the league campaign, and a drawn league match does not proceed to extra time or penalties.
The standard points system awards three points for a win, one for a draw and none for a defeat. Positions are primarily determined by total points. When teams finish level, goal difference is used as the next comparison, followed by goals scored. This gives every fixture significance across the full season, whether a club is competing for promotion, seeking to avoid relegation or trying to improve its final position.
Promotion, relegation and the season calendar
The league champion earns direct promotion to Superettan. The runner-up may also have a route upwards through a two-legged promotion play-off against a Superettan club, with the participating positions and detailed conditions governed by the regulations in force for the relevant season. These ties are played over home and away legs, and extra time or penalties may be used where required to determine the aggregate winner.
At the other end of the table, the bottom three clubs are directly relegated to Division 2. Relegation and promotion arrangements can include additional play-off provisions under the applicable Swedish regulations, so the exact consequences for other finishing positions should be read in the context of the relevant edition. The final table consequently carries sporting and financial importance well beyond the title race.
The competition follows Sweden’s spring-to-autumn football calendar. A typical season begins in late March or early April and concludes in early November, avoiding the most difficult winter conditions. The schedule may include a mid-summer pause, and promotion or relegation play-offs are generally held after the regular league programme. This calendar allows clubs to complete a full home-and-away season within conditions suited to football across Sweden.
For followers of Swedish football, Ettan Södra is both a competitive league and a key transition point in the national pyramid. Its regional structure keeps travel and sporting relationships manageable, while its direct connection with Superettan ensures that the division remains an important destination for clubs seeking professional status.
