Erovnuli Liga is Georgia’s premier professional men’s football league and the top division in the country’s domestic football pyramid. Also recorded as the Georgian Erovnuli Liga, it exists to crown Georgia’s national champion, provide a route into UEFA club competitions and connect the leading Georgian clubs with the promotion and relegation system below the top flight.
Identity and purpose
The league was established in 1990, following the emergence of Georgia’s modern national football structure, and is governed by the Georgian Football Federation (GFF). It represents the highest level of domestic league football in Georgia, bringing together clubs from across the country in a single-table championship. Its sporting importance extends beyond the title race: final positions determine European access, survival in the top division and movement between the Erovnuli Liga and Erovnuli Liga 2.
The competition was historically known as the Umaglesi Liga before being rebranded as the Erovnuli Liga in 2017. That change formed part of a broader effort to modernise the league’s identity and strengthen its professional and commercial profile. League structure and European access
The Erovnuli Liga is a professional league competition featuring 10 clubs. It uses a single-table system rather than groups or a knockout bracket within the main league phase. Every team plays each of the other nine teams four times: twice at home and twice away. This produces 36 league matches per club and makes consistency across the full season central to success.
The champion earns access to the qualifying rounds of the UEFA Champions League. The teams finishing second and third generally receive places in UEFA Conference League qualifying, subject to the applicable European allocation and competition regulations for the relevant season. The division is also part of an open football pyramid. The team finishing 10th is relegated automatically. Relegation play-offs also provide a route for lower-ranked top-flight clubs and leading Erovnuli Liga 2 teams to contest top-flight survival or promotion, with the precise pairings determined by the regulations applying to the season.
How the season is decided
Matches use the standard points system: three points for a win, one for a draw and none for a defeat. Because the league is played over 36 fixtures, points accumulated across the campaign normally provide the clearest measure of performance. If teams finish level on points, ranking is determined through head-to-head criteria before the broader record is considered. The order is generally:
*- points won in matches between the tied teams;
*- goal difference in those head-to-head matches;
*- goals scored in those head-to-head matches;
*- away goals scored in head-to-head matches where the comparison is between two teams;
*- overall goal difference;
*- total goals scored.
These criteria can affect the champion, European places and relegation positions, so a team’s record against its direct rivals may be decisive even when its overall goal difference appears stronger. The regular league programme itself is not a knockout competition: draws are settled through the points and classification rules rather than extra time or penalties. Separate promotion and relegation play-offs, when scheduled, are distinct from the league table and use their own tie-resolution procedures.
Calendar, governance and sporting stakes
The competition follows a spring-to-autumn calendar, usually beginning in late February or March and concluding in early December. This scheduling pattern limits the need for top-flight matches during Georgia’s winter period and helps clubs prepare for the timing of UEFA qualifying competitions. It also creates a compact championship race in which late-season fixtures can simultaneously decide the title, European places and relegation.
The GFF oversees the competition framework, including rules of entry, player registration and refereeing standards. It also supports the wider annual recognition of achievement through the Erovnuli Liga Awards. Clubs therefore compete not only for the league championship but also for European opportunity, financial and sporting progression, and the right to remain at Georgia’s highest domestic level.
