Division Profesional - Apertura is a Paraguayan league competition and one of the two principal seasonal tournaments in the country’s top professional football division. Known as the Apertura, or Opening Tournament, it gives clubs a separate opportunity to compete for a national title during the first half of Paraguay’s football year. Role in Paraguayan football

The competition forms part of the Primera División de Paraguay, the highest level of the national football pyramid. It exists to crown a champion from the country’s leading clubs while providing a regular competitive route towards South American club football. The division is governed by the Asociación Paraguaya de Fútbol (APF), whose regulatory framework covers participation, competition administration, player registration, officiating and compliance with wider CONMEBOL and FIFA standards.

The Apertura is not an isolated cup competition. It is a league tournament played by clubs already competing in Paraguay’s top flight. Promotion into the division comes through the División Intermedia, while clubs at the bottom of the top division can lose their status through the relegation system. Participating clubs must satisfy the relevant sporting and organisational requirements for professional football, including registration and licensing conditions.

Format and progression

The Apertura uses a double round-robin league format. Each participating team plays the other teams twice, normally once at home and once away. The fixture sequence is established before the tournament begins, but the competition itself is decided by the points table rather than by a knockout bracket. This structure rewards consistency across the full schedule and gives every club repeated opportunities to recover from a poor result.

The standard points system is used: three points for a win, one for a draw and no points for a defeat. The club finishing highest at the end of the tournament is the champion, subject to the competition’s title-deciding provisions. If teams are level on points in a decisive position, a defining playoff match may be used to determine the title. Where a winner must be produced on the day, extra time and, if necessary, a penalty shootout provide the final resolution. For other positions, the applicable ranking criteria include goal difference, goals scored and head-to-head considerations.

Points earned in the Apertura do not carry into the Clausura. Each tournament begins a new league campaign and offers its own route to the title. However, the two competitions remain connected through the aggregate table, commonly known as the Tabla Acumulativa. Results across the Apertura and Clausura help determine wider end-of-year outcomes, including places in South America’s club competitions and the clubs exposed to relegation.

Calendar and season structure

Paraguayan football follows the calendar year. The Apertura is generally played from late January through the first half of the year, extending into the southern hemisphere’s autumn and early winter. The Clausura follows in the second half of the year and normally concludes in the spring or early summer. Most fixtures are scheduled at weekends, while midweek rounds may be added to accommodate international dates, domestic scheduling requirements or continental competition.

The split-season model creates two distinct competitive races. A club can recover from an unsuccessful Apertura in the Clausura, while a strong first tournament can establish an important position in the aggregate standings. This balance between immediate honours and year-long performance is one of the defining features of Paraguayan top-flight football.

Winning the Apertura is a major domestic achievement, but its significance extends beyond the tournament trophy. Paraguay’s strongest clubs compete for access to the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana, the two principal South American club competitions. Qualification positions are linked to performance across the domestic season, with aggregate points from the Apertura and Clausura playing an important role in the allocation of places.

At the opposite end of the table, clubs also compete to preserve their top-flight status. Relegation is determined through the Promedio, a rolling points-average system based on performances over three seasons. This means that a club’s immediate form matters, but its position can also reflect results accumulated over a longer period. The system adds a significant layer of pressure to every league campaign, particularly for teams near the bottom of the standings.
