1. Division, also known as the Cypriot First Division, is Cyprus’s top-level men’s professional football league. It is a national league competition governed by the Cyprus Football Association (CFA) and forms the summit of the Cypriot football pyramid. Its purpose is to determine the national champion, provide a route into European club competitions and maintain sporting movement between the top flight and the Cypriot Second Division.
Identity and historical role
Founded in 1934, the competition was created to organise football under a unified national structure and has developed from a comparatively small domestic circuit into a professional league with an established place in European football. Its commercial identity has changed over time: it has also been known as the Cyta Championship and the Cyprus League by Stoiximan during different sponsorship periods. These names reflect title sponsorship rather than a change in the league’s role as Cyprus’s leading domestic championship.
The CFA, also founded in 1934, is responsible for the competition’s regulatory, disciplinary and technical framework. Its responsibilities include competition administration, match standards, club eligibility and the application of the rules governing league football. Clubs must gain entry through sporting merit and meet the relevant association and UEFA licensing requirements, including standards connected with finance, stadium infrastructure and youth development.
How the competition works
The Cypriot First Division generally features 14 clubs and is played in two phases. The opening phase uses a double round-robin format: each team meets every other team twice, once at home and once away. With 14 clubs, this produces 26 regular-season matches per side.
After the first phase, the standings determine the composition of the second phase. The leading six clubs enter the championship group, where they continue competing for the title and the highest available European qualification places. The other eight clubs enter the relegation group and compete to preserve their top-flight status. The points, goals and relevant head-to-head records accumulated during the regular season are carried into the second phase, so the final outcome reflects the complete league campaign rather than a separate knockout tournament.
The bottom three clubs in the relegation group face automatic relegation to the Cypriot Second Division. Promotion from the second tier provides the principal sporting route into the top flight, creating a continuing cycle of advancement and demotion between Cyprus’s two leading divisions.
Points, ranking and match rules
League matches use the standard three-point system: a win earns three points, a draw earns one and a defeat earns none. Matches are normally decided over 90 minutes, with extra time and penalty shoot-outs generally associated with cup ties or exceptional one-off play-off matches rather than ordinary league fixtures.
When teams finish level on points, ranking is determined through a head-to-head sequence. The supplied competition rules place points won in matches between the tied teams first, followed by goal difference in those encounters and then away goals scored in head-to-head matches. Overall goal difference across the season is considered afterwards. These criteria make individual meetings especially important, particularly when teams are separated by narrow margins at the end of either phase.
Season calendar and sporting stakes
The competition normally follows the European autumn-to-spring calendar, beginning around August or late August and concluding in May. Regular-season fixtures occupy the opening part of the campaign, while the split into championship and relegation groups concentrates the decisive matches in the spring. Winning 1. Division brings the title of champion of Cyprus and represents the principal domestic achievement available to a Cypriot club. Other European places may be assigned to leading league finishers and the Cypriot Cup winner, with routes potentially leading to the UEFA Europa League or UEFA Conference League according to the applicable qualification arrangements for the relevant season.
