1. Deild About
1. Deild, also known as Faroe Islands 1. deild, is the nationwide men’s second-tier league in the Faroe Islands. It forms a key part of the Faroese football pyramid, sitting below the Premier League and above 2. deild. Governed by the Faroe Islands Football Association (Fótbóltssamband Føroya, or FSF), the competition combines promotion opportunities for ambitious clubs with an important development environment for emerging Faroese players and reserve teams.
Role in Faroese football
The league’s principal purpose is to provide a competitive route towards the top division. Clubs can enter 1. Deild after promotion from 2. deild or following relegation from the Premier League. At the end of the season, the leading eligible teams move up to the Premier League, while the teams at the bottom descend to the third tier.
This makes the competition both a destination for established clubs seeking to return to the top flight and a platform for developing players. The league may include independent first teams alongside reserve sides operated by Premier League clubs. Reserve teams can compete in 1. Deild, but they are not eligible for promotion to the Premier League. If a reserve side finishes in a promotion position, the place passes to the highest-ranked eligible first team.
The separation between a club’s senior and reserve sides is also maintained when teams change divisions. If a first team is relegated to 1. Deild while its reserve team is already competing there, the reserve side is moved down to 2. deild so that both teams do not occupy the same division.
History and governance
The competition was established in 1943 as Meðaldeildin. At that time, it served as the top level of Faroese football. Its place in the national structure changed when the modern Premier League was established through the restructuring of the league system in 2005. Since then, 1. Deild has operated as the second tier and as one of the main routes into the country’s highest division.
The FSF defines the competition’s regulations, eligibility requirements and matchday standards. The association’s wider role in Faroese football connects the domestic pyramid with the international game, while the league itself remains a domestic competition played by clubs from across the Faroe Islands.
Format and season structure
The competition normally features 10 clubs and uses a triple round-robin format. Each team plays every other team three times, producing 27 league matches per club in a season. Because an odd number of meetings cannot give every fixture an equal home-and-away balance, a draw is held before the season to determine which clubs receive the additional home match. Depending on that allocation, a team plays either 14 matches at home and 13 away, or 13 at home and 14 away.
The season generally runs from March to October. This spring-to-autumn calendar reflects the conditions of football in the North Atlantic and provides a compact schedule for a competition in which travel, weather and local facilities are important practical considerations. The league is separate from the Faroe Islands Cup, a knockout competition in which participating clubs may also take part.
Points and ranking rules
1. Deild uses the standard league points system:
– 3 points for a win
– 1 point for a draw
– 0 points for a defeat
Teams are first ordered by total points. When clubs finish level, goal difference is used as the first tiebreaker, followed by total goals scored. These criteria reward both defensive consistency and attacking output across the full league programme. As 1. Deild is a league competition rather than a knockout tournament, regular-season matches do not normally require extra time or penalty shootouts.
Promotion, relegation and sporting importance
The top two eligible clubs earn promotion to the Premier League, subject to the competition’s reserve-team restrictions. The bottom two are relegated to 2. deild. Consequently, every position can carry significance: the title race and promotion places shape the future of ambitious clubs, while the lower end of the table determines who remains in the second tier.
Winning 1. Deild is an important domestic achievement, but the title does not provide direct entry to European competitions. Faroese European places are reserved for clubs qualifying through the top division and the national cup. The second tier therefore has a clear sporting identity: it is a national league built around progression, competitive recovery and player development rather than continental qualification.
