Copa Colombia About
Copa Colombia, officially known as the Copa BetPlay Dimayor, is Colombia’s national domestic cup competition for men’s professional football. Governed by the División Mayor del Fútbol Profesional Colombiano (DIMAYOR), it brings together clubs from the country’s two professional divisions, Categoría Primera A and Categoría Primera B, in a tournament designed to crown Colombia’s cup champion and provide a route to continental football.
A national cup across Colombia’s professional game
The competition occupies a distinctive place in the Colombian football calendar. Unlike the league championships, which are contested within separate divisions, the Copa Colombia creates a shared national contest for professional clubs. Its appeal lies in the possibility of cross-division ties, giving Primera B sides the opportunity to challenge established top-flight teams while offering Primera A clubs another route to silverware.
Participation is generally reserved for the professional clubs affiliated with DIMAYOR. The field typically consists of 36 teams, with automatic entry for member clubs from both Primera A and Primera B. The point at which a club enters depends on the regulations for the relevant edition and may reflect previous league performance or international qualification. Lower-ranked or second-tier teams commonly begin in earlier rounds, while leading Primera A clubs can receive byes into later stages.
Origins and modern development
The competition’s history reaches back to 1950, although its early existence was interrupted by periods in which it was not held. The modern, continuous version was re-established in 2008 and has since become a regular part of Colombia’s professional football structure. This history explains why the Copa Colombia combines a long-established name with a relatively modern annual format.
DIMAYOR is responsible for the competition’s regulations, calendar, participation requirements and match procedures. Those regulations can change from one edition to another, so the precise number of preliminary rounds, the entry points for individual clubs and the arrangement of the final stages should be understood in the context of the season being played.
How the competition works
The Copa Colombia is primarily a knockout tournament, usually built around home-and-away ties. Recent editions have used three or four preliminary stages before the final phase, which normally consists of the Round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final. The exact structure is not permanently fixed: some editions have included a group stage in the opening phase before moving into direct elimination.
In a typical progression, clubs entering early rounds compete to reduce the field, after which higher-seeded or later-entering Primera A teams join the competition. Subsequent rounds are determined by the applicable draw and seeding arrangements. Depending on the edition, draws may establish the opponents, the route through the bracket or the order in which two-legged ties are played.
Most knockout ties are decided over two matches. The team scoring more goals across both legs advances. When the aggregate score is level, the applicable regulations generally send the tie directly to a penalty shootout rather than using extra time, although specific editions and stages must be checked against their published rules. The final is treated differently in the supplied recent format: if the score is level after 90 minutes, it normally proceeds through 30 minutes of extra time and then penalties if required.
Where a group stage is used, the standard points convention is three points for a win and one for a draw. Group ranking and progression are then determined by the competition regulations for that edition. This blend of group-stage football in some opening rounds and two-legged elimination in later phases makes the Copa Colombia a flexible hybrid competition rather than a tournament with one unchanging format.
Calendar and sporting stakes
The tournament usually occupies much of the calendar year. Matches commonly begin between February and May, with the competition concluding in November or December, although scheduling varies by edition. Fixtures are often placed in midweek to accommodate the domestic league programme and the demands of clubs competing in South American competitions.
The prize is more than a national trophy. The winner has traditionally earned qualification for the following season’s Copa Sudamericana, although historical editions have associated the competition with a Copa Libertadores place instead. The relevant continental allocation is therefore season-specific and should be read alongside the regulations for that edition. Winning the cup also carries significant domestic prestige and establishes a club among the notable champions of Colombian football.
Atlético Nacional is the competition’s most successful club, a record that reflects its sustained strength in Colombian football. Yet the tournament’s broader importance comes from its national reach: it connects Colombia’s professional tiers, creates high-stakes knockout ties and gives clubs outside the top flight a realistic opportunity to compete for major honours.
