A Lyga is Lithuania’s top-flight professional football league, currently promoted in sponsorship branding as TOPLYGA. Governed by the Lithuanian Football Federation (LFF), it is the highest level of the Lithuanian football pyramid and the country’s principal domestic competition for determining its champion, European representatives and relegation candidates.
Role in Lithuanian football
The league brings together Lithuania’s leading eligible clubs in a national competition built around sporting merit, professional standards and long-term development. Its champion is recognised as the country’s strongest league side and normally gains access to UEFA Champions League qualifying, while other leading clubs and the Lithuanian Cup winner typically enter UEFA Conference League qualifying. The LFF sets the competition’s framework, oversees club licensing and is responsible for maintaining sporting and administrative standards. Entry is therefore not determined solely by a club’s position on the pitch. The normal sporting route is through the Lithuanian league pyramid. Clubs may reach the division through promotion from I Lyga, while established A Lyga members retain their place by achieving the required league position and securing a licence for the following season. At the lower end of the table, the bottom club is typically relegated to I Lyga, while the second-bottom side may have to contest a relegation play-off against a challenger from the division below. League format and matchday competition
A Lyga is a league rather than a knockout cup. The usual structure features 10 teams playing a quadruple round-robin schedule, with each club meeting every other club four times—twice at home and twice away—for a standard total of 36 matches. This format rewards sustained performance across the season, although the exact field size and schedule should be read in the context of the regulations for each edition.
A win is worth three points, a draw one point and a defeat no points. If teams finish level on points, ranking is generally resolved through head-to-head criteria before overall seasonal measures: head-to-head points, head-to-head goal difference, head-to-head goals scored, overall goal difference and overall goals scored. Where the championship itself requires a special deciding play-off between teams tied at the top, that provision takes precedence over simply relying on the table.
The league should be distinguished from the Lithuanian Cup. Cup ties are knockout matches and can require two 15-minute periods of extra time and then a penalty shoot-out if the scores remain level. Those procedures do not turn the regular A Lyga season into a knockout competition.
