2a Divisió, also known as the Andorran Segona Divisió, is Andorra’s men’s second-tier football league and an important part of the country’s national football pyramid. Organised by the Andorran Football Federation (FAF), it provides competitive football for affiliated clubs and a route towards the Primera Divisió, the principality’s top flight.

Role in Andorran football

The competition exists to give clubs below the top division a structured national league in which to develop, compete for promotion and build the sporting foundations required for higher-level football. It also supports the development of local players and contributes to the wider pathway that feeds talent into Andorran football, including the national-team system.

The league was established in 1999 as part of the formal development of the Andorran football pyramid. Its recorded competition coverage extends from the 2011 season through 2024, reflecting more than a decade of documented league activity. The first recorded event in the available competition history took place on 29 November 2020.

Clubs and eligibility

Participation is open to clubs affiliated with the FAF and based in Andorra, provided they satisfy the federation’s registration and licensing requirements. The division has a distinctive relationship with the Primera Divisió because it can include reserve or “B” teams belonging to top-flight clubs.

These reserve sides add depth and competitive opportunities to the league, but they cannot be promoted while their parent club remains in the Primera Divisió. Promotion is therefore reserved for an eligible independent club, or another club that is not affiliated with a current first-division side. Sporting position and administrative eligibility must both be considered when the promotion places are confirmed.

League structure and format

The 2a Divisió typically follows a hybrid, multi-stage format. The season begins with a regular phase in which teams meet in a round-robin schedule, generally playing each opponent at home and away. This opening stage establishes the initial standings and determines the seeding for the decisive part of the campaign.

After the regular phase, the table may be divided into groups. The leading sides enter a promotion or championship group, where they continue competing for the title and the opportunity to move into the Primera Divisió. Other clubs may enter a lower placement or relegation group to complete the season’s final standings. Points earned in the regular phase are typically carried into the subsequent phase, ensuring that performance across the full campaign remains significant.

The second-stage schedule is not an open draw. Matchups are normally determined by the final regular-season positions and the competition structure set by the FAF before the season begins. This creates a clear progression from the initial league programme to the high-stakes closing phase.

Points, match rules and play-offs

League matches use the standard football points system: three points for a win, one for a draw and none for a defeat. When teams finish level on points, ranking is generally resolved first through head-to-head performance, followed by goal difference in those matches and then wider goal-difference or goals-scored criteria where required by the applicable regulations.

Extra time and penalties are not part of ordinary league matches. They can, however, be used in the separate promotion play-off between the second-tier runner-up and the second-to-last team in the Primera Divisió. This tie is played over two legs, with extra time and a penalty shoot-out available if the aggregate score remains level after the second match.

Promotion and sporting stakes

The central prize is advancement to the Primera Divisió. The league champion normally earns direct promotion, subject to the eligibility rules governing reserve teams and club licensing. The runner-up may have another route through the two-legged promotion play-off against the top flight’s second-to-last side. These mechanisms give the final phase importance for both clubs pursuing the title and those trying to secure a place in the country’s highest division.

Reaching the Primera Divisió is significant beyond domestic status. It gives an eligible club access to the top level of Andorran football and, through success in that division, the possibility of competing for qualification places in UEFA club competitions. The Segona Divisió therefore acts as the principal national bridge for ambitious clubs seeking greater visibility, stronger finances and a place among Andorra’s leading teams.

Season calendar and governance

The competition generally follows an autumn-to-spring European calendar. Matches usually begin in late September or October, with the regular phase occupying the first part of the season and the promotion, placement and promotion-relegation stages taking place later, often through the spring before the campaign concludes in May.

The FAF oversees the league’s sporting and administrative framework, including competition regulations, club participation, disciplinary matters, registration and officiating standards. Through that structure, the 2a Divisió combines a regular league programme with a decisive progression system, making it both a development competition and the main route from Andorran second-tier football to the national top flight.
