Fixture and table context

The CBF official fixture listing and Santos ticket notice confirm Thursday's Brazilian Serie A round-29 match at Vila Belmiro in Santos. At 01:00 UTC on 8 October, the match was still marked as not started. A secondary listing conflicts with the official notices, so only the confirmed 19:30 BRT / 22:30 UTC is used here.

CBF's 7 October table placed Flamengo three points ahead of Palmeiras. That is a current league margin, not a permanent status: Flamengo enter first with 60 points from 28, while Santos are eighth with 41 from 28. The 5 April first-leg meeting ended Flamengo 3-1 Santos and supplies historical context only.

The five-game runs are not like-for-like

The latest five completed league matches for each side are set out below, oldest to newest.

Both rows are five wins, but Santos' sequence is four away and only one at Vila Belmiro; it should not be labelled a home-form run. Flamengo's is the reverse venue pattern. Santos scored 10 and conceded 5; Flamengo also scored 10 but conceded 2.

Flamengo's 96 shots and 31 on target over five matches average 19.2 and 6.2 per match, against Santos' 64, 24, 12.8 and 4.8. Mean recorded possession was 62.6% for Flamengo and 48.0% for Santos. Those figures describe different opponents and venues. With xG missing from all 10 matches, shots cannot establish chance quality or result certainty.

Venue records add context, not a forecast

The full-season venue view aligns Santos' home sample with Flamengo's away sample. Both samples contain 14 matches, making their denominators equal even though the recent streaks have opposite venue mixes.

Full-season venue records relevant to the fixture; each sample has 14 matches.

Santos are 6W 4D 4L at home, with 20 goals scored and 18 conceded; Flamengo are 8W 3D 3L away, with 27 scored and 13 conceded. These are descriptive rates, not match probabilities. They show the setting matters, but do not make the five-game comparison like-for-like.

Squad changes, availability and schedule gaps

Transfers provide context, not a causal explanation

Santos announced Rodinei on 2 September, Lima on loan through the end of 2026 on 4 September, and Everton Cebolinha on 9 September. Flamengo confirmed Cebolinha's departure on 9 September and presented Joaquín Freitas and Anthony Valencia on 4 September. Santos' official 2 October report documents Rodinei and Cebolinha in the lineup. Their appearances overlap with the run, but that does not prove the arrivals caused it.

Reported availability is not a confirmed XI

The 7 October Santos team-news report lists Neymar, Gabriel Bontempo and Luan Peres as options; reports Arthur injured and Cebolinha and Caballero not selected; and says Neymar may begin on the bench. These are reported notes, not an official XI. A separate 7 October Flamengo report places Pedro and Samuel Lino in the travelling squad and reports Léo Ortiz, Varela, Ayrton Lucas, De Arrascaeta and Evertton Araújo absent; exact roles remain unfixed. Flamengo's official 1 October statement confirmed De Arrascaeta's wrist surgery.

The date gap is not a recovery metric

Santos' last completed all-competition match before this research was a 2-1 win at São Paulo on 2 October; Flamengo's was a 2-1 home win over RB Bragantino on 20 September. Measured kickoff to kickoff, the intervals to 8 October are approximately 5 days 23.5 hours and 18 days 1 hour, respectively. They are calendar intervals, not recovery-time measurements. Santos played Sudamericana on 16 September and Flamengo Libertadores on 18 September, each before its last league game.

Five questions before kickoff

When and where is the match?

Thursday 8 October 2026 at Vila Belmiro in Santos, with the confirmed kickoff at 19:30 BRT / 22:30 UTC.

Do both teams arrive on five wins?

Yes. Each has five wins in the latest completed league sample. Flamengo's goal record is 10-2, Santos' is 10-5, but venue and opponents differ.

Are these home winning runs?

No. Santos won four of five away and one at home; Flamengo won four at home and one away. Santos' sequence is not home form.

Do the shot totals prove Flamengo created better chances?

No. Flamengo recorded more shots and on-target attempts, but xG is missing for all 10 matches; the sample cannot establish chance quality or certainty.

Are the starting lineups confirmed?

No. The availability items are reported options, squad selections or absences, while exact roles remain unsettled; no confirmed XI is supplied here.

Method and coverage

What the sample includes

The recent-form comparison uses exactly the five most recent completed Serie A matches for each team, ordered oldest to newest. Goals, total shots and shots on target are totals across those five matches; per-match figures divide by five. Mean possession uses the same five matches.

The venue comparison uses 14 Santos home matches and 14 Flamengo away matches, with records and goals kept at those denominators. No xG estimate is supplied: none of the 10 selected matches has a recorded xG value. All-competition dates and team-news reports are context, not part of league-form totals. Official fixture and club announcements are separated from reported availability, which is not treated as a confirmed XI.

Limitations

The main limitation is comparability. Santos' five wins came in a four-away, one-home mix, while Flamengo's came in a one-away, four-home mix, and the opponents are different. A matching 5-0 record therefore does not measure identical difficulty.

  • Possession and shot totals depend on the opponent and venue; without xG, they cannot serve as a chance-quality measure.
  • Availability reports do not fix the starting XI, and transfer announcements are not exhaustive; matchday roles can change.
  • The 14-match venue records are descriptive rates, not match probabilities.
  • The 3-1 Flamengo win on 5 April is historical context, not evidence that the same outcome follows.
  • Rodinei and Cebolinha appearing in the 2 October lineup overlaps with Santos' run, but overlap is not proof that the signings caused it.

The evidence supports comparing table position, recent output and venue context; it does not support converting those descriptions into a result prediction.
