Method and coverage
The unit of comparison is the matchday, and every unit has the same base: 18 UEFA Champions League league-phase matches. Eight matchdays therefore make up the 144-match scope. That fixed denominator matters when reading a count such as 67 goals or 10 one-goal decisions: each is a matchday count from 18 matches.
The primary comparison stops at the league phase. Qualifiers and knockout matches are excluded. The aggregate figures below therefore describe only those 144 matches. Goals, draws, one-goal decisions and 0-0 matches are kept as separate measures rather than blended into a single ranking.
Team goal totals and league-phase standings can be used as descriptive context, but not as a causal ranking. They describe team-level outcomes; they do not, by themselves, explain why a particular matchday had its observed goal or result pattern.
The eight-matchday frame
The schedule denominator is constant; the reported event counts differ by measure and round. The table shows all eight matchdays and keeps the 18-match denominator visible. An em dash means no additional matchday figure is stated here, not that the value was zero.
| Matchday | Matches | Reported matchday figure |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 18 | 3 0-0 matches |
| 2 | 18 | — |
| 3 | 18 | 51 goals |
| 4 | 18 | 1 draw |
| 5 | 18 | 67 goals |
| 6 | 18 | — |
| 7 | 18 | 10 one-goal decisions; 1 draw |
| 8 | 18 | — |
The dash marks an unreported round-specific figure in this comparison. It should not be read as zero.
Goal volume across the league phase
Across the full league-phase scope, 470 goals were scored in 144 matches. The two matchday goal totals highlighted by the comparison are 67 on matchday 5 and 51 on matchday 3. Since both rounds contain 18 matches, the comparison is like-for-like on match count.
| Measure | Count | Denominator or scope |
|---|---|---|
| Matches | 144 | 8 matchdays × 18 matches |
| Goals | 470 | 144 matches |
| Draws | 18 | 144 matches |
| One-goal decisions | 54 | 144 matches |
| 0-0 matches | 8 | 144 matches |
Read chronologically, these figures do not provide a complete line for every round. They support the descriptive observation that the reported total for matchday 5 was higher than the reported total for matchday 3, but they do not support a claim about an uninterrupted rise or fall across all eight matchdays. Nor do they establish why the aggregate reached 470.
Scorelines behind the totals
Individual results also matter when interpreting an aggregate. The scoreline context includes Bayern München 9-2 Dinamo Zagreb, Benfica 4-5 Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund 7-1 Celtic and Real Madrid 5-2 Borussia Dortmund. These results show that a phase-level goal total can contain varied scorelines and winning margins. They should remain context, however: without a matchday allocation stated here, they do not explain the 67-goal or 51-goal totals.
Draws, one-goal decisions and 0-0 matches
Goals are only one way to describe how the phase changed. Across 144 matches, 18 ended as draws, 54 were one-goal decisions and eight finished 0-0. A 0-0 is a draw, so the eight scoreless matches sit within the 18-draw total. A one-goal decision is separate: it is a match won by a one-goal margin.
| Result pattern | Count | Denominator |
|---|---|---|
| Draws | 18 | 144 matches |
| One-goal decisions | 54 | 144 matches |
| 0-0 matches | 8 | 144 matches |
The matchday details show distinct patterns rather than one combined measure. Matchday 7 had 10 one-goal decisions and one draw, each counted from 18 matches. Matchday 4 also had one draw from 18 matches, while matchday 1 had three 0-0 matches from 18. A round with many one-goal decisions is not the same thing as a round with many draws, and a 0-0 count cannot be substituted for the total draw count.
Team totals and standings as context
Team goal totals and the league-phase standings provide a second, team-level lens. They can describe how many goals teams accumulated and how the league-phase table was ordered, but they should not be turned into a causal ranking of matchdays. A team total is an outcome aggregated at team level; a standings position is an ordering of outcomes. Neither alone demonstrates that a team caused the 67 goals on matchday 5, the 51 on matchday 3, the 10 one-goal decisions on matchday 7 or any draw or 0-0 count.
The evidence-led reading is therefore descriptive: team context can be set alongside the matchday record, then stopped at association. Correlation, or simple coincidence, does not prove causation, and no causal ranking is claimed here.
Limitations of the comparison
Several boundaries define what can be concluded:
- Coverage: the primary scope is exactly 144 league-phase matches across eight matchdays. Qualifiers and knockouts are excluded.
- Denominators: each matchday has 18 matches, while the overall counts use 144. The round-specific counts must be read against that fixed base.
- Matchday detail: the reported round-specific figures are 67 goals for matchday 5, 51 for matchday 3, 10 one-goal decisions and one draw for matchday 7, one draw for matchday 4 and three 0-0 matches for matchday 1. Unlisted round-level cells are not zeros.
- Inference: scoreline examples, team goal totals and standings are descriptive context. They do not prove that one matchday caused another result pattern, a team total or a league-phase position.
