What the ranking measures

A denominator-specific efficiency rate

This ranking measures how many goals a team scored for every 100 shots on target in the 2025-26 Champions League figures supplied for the comparison. It is therefore a shot-on-target conversion rate, not a conversion rate based on every shot attempted.

The formula is:

goals ÷ shots on target × 100

For example, PSV Eindhoven recorded 16 goals and 31 shots on target. Applying the formula gives 16 ÷ 31 × 100, shown in the ranking as 51.6 goals per 100 shots on target. The goals figure and the shots-on-target denominator should always be read alongside the rate; the rate alone does not show how much evidence sits behind it.

The measure answers a narrow question: how frequently did shots on target become goals, relative to the number of shots on target recorded? It does not answer how many total shots a team took, how often it created shots on target, or whether it had the most goals overall. Those distinctions matter when comparing teams with different totals and different numbers of covered matches.

A higher figure is an observed relationship between goals and shots on target. It should not automatically be treated as a pure measure of finishing ability. The inclusion rule

The ranking applies a minimum of six statistically covered matches. Teams with fewer than six covered matches are outside the comparison. Every team shown below meets that threshold, but the number of covered matches is not identical across the top 10.

The match count is included as context rather than as part of the formula. The rate uses goals and shots on target; matches show the amount of covered competition represented by each team’s figures. In this list, coverage ranges from six matches for Ferencvarosi TC to 15 matches for Atletico Madrid and Paris Saint Germain.

The rates are shown to one decimal place, and the underlying goals and shots-on-target totals are retained in full as supplied. This convention avoids presenting more precision than the ranking provides while keeping the denominator visible.

How to read the comparison

A team can rank highly because it has a high ratio of goals to shots on target, even if its total number of shots on target is relatively small. Conversely, a team can record many goals and many shots on target while placing lower in the rate ranking. Neither result should be mistaken for the other.

For that reason, the table reports four separate pieces of information: covered matches, goals, shots on target and goals per 100 shots on target. Together, they show both the ranking position and the scale of the figures behind it.

The top 10 teams

The top four all exceed 44.8: PSV Eindhoven, Borussia Dortmund, Qarabag and Ferencvarosi TC. The next six are below that mark, although Tottenham, Atletico Madrid and Paris Saint Germain remain above or near 39.2. These are descriptive differences in the supplied figures, not proof that one team’s underlying process caused another team’s position.

Volume versus efficiency

The highest rate is not the highest total

The most immediate contrast is between PSV Eindhoven and Bayern München. PSV ranks first with 16 goals from 31 shots on target and a rate of 51.6. Bayern München ranks 10th but has the largest totals in the table: 43 goals and 113 shots on target, producing 38.1.

Close rates can sit on different volumes

Borussia Dortmund and Qarabag are separated by only 0.1 in the ranking: Dortmund is at 46.3 from 19 goals and 41 shots on target, while Qarabag is at 46.2 from 18 goals and 39 shots on target. Dortmund has eight covered matches and Qarabag has 10.

The closeness of the rates does not make their match coverage or totals identical. It simply indicates that the supplied goals-to-shots-on-target relationships produce very similar displayed rates. The same principle applies throughout the table.

The middle of the list is tightly grouped

Eintracht Frankfurt ranks fifth at 41.7 from 10 goals and 24 shots on target. Tottenham is sixth at 40.7 from 22 goals and 54 shots on target, followed by Atletico Madrid at 40.5 from 32 goals and 79 shots on target. The adjacent rates are close, but the underlying match counts and totals vary: Frankfurt has eight covered matches, Tottenham 10 and Atletico Madrid 15.

Bodo/Glimt and Bayern München complete the list at 38.3 and 38.1. Bodo/Glimt’s line is 23 goals from 60 shots on target across 12 covered matches. Bayern München’s is 43 goals from 113 shots on target across 14. Their places illustrate again that more goals or more shots on target do not automatically produce a higher rate.

Limitations and interpretation

It is not conversion on all shots

The largest methodological limitation is also the most important definition: the denominator is shots on target. A shot that is not on target is not part of this calculation. Consequently, the table should not be described as conversion on all shots, and its figures should not be used as though they were calculated from every attempt.

The rate does not isolate one cause

A high goals-per-100-shots-on-target rate can reflect finishing, chance quality, goalkeeper outcomes and sample variance. The metric records the observed relationship between goals and shots on target; it does not separate those possible influences. It is therefore not evidence, by itself, that a team’s finishing skill alone explains its ranking.

This is a correlation-versus-causation point in plain terms: seeing a higher rate alongside a team’s results does not prove that one isolated attribute caused the rate. Nor does the table establish that the displayed rate would remain unchanged with different covered matches or a different sample.

Coverage and scale differ

The minimum of six statistically covered matches prevents the list from including teams below that coverage level, but the teams shown still span six to 15 covered matches. Their shot-on-target totals also vary substantially, from 24 for Eintracht Frankfurt to 113 for Bayern München. A six-match line and a 15-match line should therefore be considered with their respective denominators and coverage counts visible.

The most responsible reading is to use the rate as one narrowly defined comparison and retain the goals, shots on target and covered matches beside it. That preserves both the efficiency signal and the limitations of the evidence.
